Arcadia sweeps the home & home series with a 7-0 win over Burbank

The Arcadia Apaches swept the home and home series with a 7-0 win over the Burbank Bulldogs behind 5 scoreless frames by Fernando Palencia, who struck out 13 batters. Palencia had a perfect game until it was broken up in the bottom of the 4th inning by Bryant Johnson. Heading into the series finale of the home and home series, Arcadia took the first game of the series with an 11-3 victory on Wednesday, February 29th at Arcadia High School.

The 1st inning started off being a pitcher’s duel with Robert Synder retiring the side in order in the top half of the opening frame, while Palencia struck out the side in the bottom of the 1st. The Apaches got the scoring going when Maverick Silva delivered a big hit with 2 outs. His 2-run RBI double scored Avery Truesdale and Jordan Vogel to give Arcadia a 2-0 lead. Truesdale later hit a 2-run opposite field home run in the top of the 3rd to help the Apaches increase the lead to 5.

The Bulldogs were held hitless for the first 3 innings until Bryant Johnson broke up the perfect game in the bottom of the 4th inning with a 2-out double. Arcadia’s pitching held Burbank to 0 runs the rest of the way with Gus Cooper tossing a scoreless 6th inning and Damian Catano tossing a scoreless 7th to complete the 2-game sweep of Burbank.

“Our offense got too passive at the plate, but Fernando Palencia had his stuff in the win for Arcadia, and hats off to him,” said Bulldogs head coach Bob Hart. Hart admitted that the team tends to not swing at pitches that are strikes and swing at balls that are outside the zone since the Bulldogs are off to a slow start offensively so far this season.

Arcadia improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League play while Burbank drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Pacific League play. Burbank will look to try to get out of a 1-5 hole when they begin a 2 home-and-home series with Muir on Tuesday, March 5th, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:45 PM. Arcadia will look to continue its hot start when they also begin a 2 game home and home series with Pasadena on the same day and same time.
