The John Burroughs Bears complete a 2-game back-to-back home sweep on Saturday, March 16, with a 5-4 win over the El Camino Real Royals on a walk-off RBI single by Nickolas Fritz. Burroughs defeated Muir the day before 9-3. The Bears also defeated the Mustangs at Muir on Tuesday, March 12, 4-2. El Camino Real also played the day before, a 5-6 loss to Birmingham.

Both pitchers started strong, with Dylan Adams and Evlis Moreno retiring the side to start the game. Shaw extended the Royals lead to 3-0 in the top of the 4th inning to score Gavin Faley on an RBI groundout.

The Bears were held hitless in the first 3 innings but got the offense going in the bottom of the 4th inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Devin Whittenkiend and Andrew Cosio to get Burroughs back in the game. Burroughs got 2 gift runs in the bottom of the 5th inning with Willin Armes scoring on a wild pitch and Eliott Ross scoring on a throwing error by the catcher while trying to throw out Nate Chapman attempting to steal 2nd base to give the Bears a 4-3 lead.

Tejeda delivered the game-tying RBI single with 2 outs scoring Devin Melins to tie the game at 4. Relief pitcher Jack Guest worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the 7th inning by stranding Ethan Granillo at 1st base to set up Burroughs to win the game in the bottom half of the inning. Nickolas Fritz delivered with a 2-out walk-off RBI single to score Dylan Connahan to win the game for Burroughs.

“We had guys banged up and had guys that played that hadn’t started before and (I) was really proud of the way they played,” said Bears coach Matt Magallon. Magallon praised Guest for doing what was asked of him in his relief outing for Elvis Moreno.

Burroughs improves to 10-2 while El Camino Real falls to 5-4. Burroughs will return to action on Tuesday, March 19th against Excelsior Charter with the first pitch slated for 6 p.m. while El Camino Real will take on Granada Hills on Wednesday, March 20th, at 3 p.m.
