Burroughs cruises by Excelsior Charter with an 8-3 victory

The John Burroughs Bears extended their win streak to 6 games with an 8-3 win over the Excelsior Charter Eagles on Tuesday afternoon. Devin Whittenkiend went 2 for 4 for Burroughs and the Bears received great pitching by Kenny Montgomery and Jack Guest, the latter recording a 3-inning save. Montgomery went 4 innings by striking out 5 batters, allowing 3 runs and 5 hits, while Guest allowed no runs and no hits in his 3 innings. Burroughs had a thrilling 5-4 win over El Camino Real on Saturday, March 16th, Excelsior Charter lost to Pasadena 1-0 on the same day.

Montgomery retired the side in order in the top of the 1st inning, while Whittenkiend drove in Nate Chapman and Nickolas Fritz to jumpstart the offense for the Bears by recording the game’s first 2 runs. Montgomery pitched another scoreless inning en route to retiring the first 6 batters of the game. Thomas Martin drove in Willie Armes with an RBI groundout to give the Bears a 3-0 lead after 2 innings. The Eagles got on the board the next inning when Isaiah Montes drove in Devin White with a 2-out RBI single. The Bears made it a 4-1 game as Fritz drove home Nate Chapman with an RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd.

The play of the night came when Fritz threw out Tyler Orrman while trying to take 2nd base to stretch a single into an extra-base hit. Burroughs added 2 more runs in the 5th with Arames and Martin driving in runs to make it an 8-3 game.

“We keep racking up wins, we did things that outclassed Excelsior Charter and it showed tonight,” said Bears head coach Matt Magallon. Magallon admitted that Guest did what he was asked to do when asked about his 3-inning save.

Burroughs improves to 11-3 while Excelsior Charter drops to 5-4. Burroughs will host La Canada on Thursday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. while Excelsior Charter will play game 2 of their series with Pasadena on Wednesday, March 20th with the first pitch slated for 3:45 p.m. at Pasadena High School.
