Julian Vigil’s two second quarter touchdowns helped the Saints to victory

The San Dimas Saints spoiled Hector Valencia’s return to the sidelines by coming away with a 49-14 victory over the Burbank Bulldogs behind two second quarter touchdowns from Justin Vigil. Vigil recorded a 15 yard rushing touchdown and then a 60 yard touchdown on the ground to give San Dimas momentum. Last season the Bulldogs finished a 3-7 overall record while posting a 1-4 record in Pacific League play and the Saints posted a 6-5 overall record and went 2-1 in the Valle Vista League.

The Bulldogs got the scoring going in the first quarter with a 6-yard red zone touchdown by Joseph Callabero to give them an early 7-0 lead. The Saints respond with a goal line touchdown of their own by Julian Vigil to tie the game at seven. San Dimas jumped out in front when Brandon Meredith threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Morquecho to give them a 14-7 lead, which was the score to end the opening quarter of play.

Burbank tied the score in the second quarter at 14 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Zackariaz to Max Kelly. Justin Vigil scored two more touchdowns for the Saints to give San Dimas a 28-14 lead heading into halftime.

Following intermission, San Dimas had determination to put the game away, scoring 21 points in the third quarter. Those scores came from Caleb Morquecho on a 41-yard run and a goal line run along with another Julian Vigil touchdown run to make it a 49-14 game. Both teams were held scoreless in the final quarter as it was mostly a defensive battle by the two squads.

“Our defense made a couple of mistakes and missed tackles hurt us in the loss to San Dimas.” said Bulldogs coach Hector Valencia. Valencia admitted that he’s optimistic that the team will learn from this early season blowout loss and admitted that it’s a long season which is more room for improvement for the Bulldogs.

Burbank falls to 0-1 while San Dimas starts off 1-0 on the new season. The Bulldogs will take the field next Friday night at 7:00 p.m with a road contest against St Genevieve at LA Valley College, while San Dimas will play their home opener against Pasadena. The next home game for Burbank will be a true home game against Filmore on their own campus, at Kemp Kallem Field following their bye week on Thursday, September 12th with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m.
