Bulldogs fall to 4-5 on the season

The Chaminade Eagles continued their hot start to the season on Monday by completing a three game sweep of the Burbank Bulldogs and Piper Carlson finished it off with her match-winning kill. The Eagles entered the contest by coming off a 5 set win over Campbell Hall while the Bulldogs came off a three game sweep over Alhambra last Thursday, August 22nd. Burbank falls to 4-5 while Chaminade improves to 8-1 on the season.

Malie Mosio and Emma Martini got the scoring going in the opening set by recording the games two points for the Eagles. Mosio recorded the games first kill while Martini scored the game’s first ace. The Eagles went on a big scoring run where they got contributions from Carlson, Sarah Shaw and Lauren Shaw, getting off to a quick start in the first half of the opening frame. Carlson and Flowers both scored aces in that scoring run, while Shaw recorded a kill to make the score 8-1. Tiffany Perez also helped contribute to the scoring for the Eagles which grew to 11-1. Burbank finally stopped the run when the ball went out of play off the Eagles followed by an ace by Arpa Khechadoorian. At one point Burbank trimmed the deficit to a 7-point game with Nareh Pogosyan and Rosee Gasparian recording consecutive points to make the score 11-18. The Eagles pulled away again and won the first set 25-12 with a game winning block by Sarah Shaw.

Burbank gave away the opening point of the second set when they were called for being out of position. Nya Sapp then made the score 2-0 with an ace. The Eagles continued their dominant play by going on a 15-1 scoring run until Khechadoorian stopped the run with a block. Khechadoorian also had an ace in that set to turn the set into a 10-point game, but that was as close as they’d get. Chaminade won the second set with a 25-15 victory.

Both teams traded points in the opening half of the third set until the Eagles had the momentum to put the game away towards the second half of the set. Nareh Pogosyan and Khechadoorian helped the Bulldogs keep pace with the Eagles throughout the set, but it was not enough for the Bulldogs to force a fourth set.

“I didn’t think they lacked their play, they played against an elite team in Chaminade but it taught the girls what you can or can’t do against the fast and slow teams,” said Bulldogs coach Morgan Bolger. Bolger admitted that the team could still work on playing consistently when asked about the Bulldogs near victory in the third set.

Both teams will return to action on Wednesday, August 28th as Burbank will take on Flintridge Prep at 5:30 p.m. and Chaminade will look to continue their hot start against South Pasadena with the opening serve at 6:00 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
