Bears extend losing streak to two

The Chaminade Eagles dominated the Burroughs Bears with a three-set sweep to give the Bears a two-game losing streak fresh off Labor Day weekend. Last week, Chaminade had a sweeping victory over South Pasadena while Burroughs suffered a rough four-set defeat to Taft. With the victory over Burroughs, Chaminade improves to an impressive 10-1 record on the season.

In the opening set, Kiana Hildabrant jump started the scoring for the Bears with the game’s first kill, while Chaminade tied the score following a service error by Zoe Davis. Piper Carlson put the Eagles in front by recording a kill. Sienna Lay recorded back-to-back kills to put the Bears within two points before Sarah Shaw responded with a kill to give the Eagles a 10-7 lead. Malie Mosio scored the match-ending kill to end the opening set with a 25-19 victory over the Bears.

The Eagles started the second set with a 4-0 scoring run with a Mosio kill, while Shayla Martinez recorded back-to-back aces. Amiela Walsh stopped the scoring run by recording a kill to put Burroughs on the board and Hildabrant continued her strong play in the second set and put Burroughs within one point with a block. Martinez and Emma Martini recorded a kill and an ace to help the Eagles lead by three points. Chaminade ultimately took the second set by an identical final of 25-19.

Chaminade got off to a 5-0 scoring run to start the third set thanks to multiple Bears’ errors, but Shayla Martinez made it a 6-0 run with an ace. The Bears stopped the scoring run with a net error committed by Chaminade and Alexandra Hammeke recorded an ace to make the score 6-2. Nya Sapp and Tiffany Perez both had back-to-back kills to push the Eagles lead back up to six at 9-3. Hildabrant and Savannah Lay also had back-to-back kills in hopes of closing the gap with Chamaniade by making the score 11-5, but that was as close as Burroughs would get. Chaminade completed the sweep with a 25-11 victory.

“Chaminade is a good team and we made a lot of errors that gave them what they wanted,” said Bears coach Edwin Real. Real admitted that the passing was off and it didn’t go the way we wanted.

Burroughs drops to 4-3 on the season with the loss to Chaminade. Both teams will return to action on Thursday, September 5th with the Eagles taking on Culver City at 6:00 p.m.. The Bears will play a late afternoon slate with South Hills with the opening serve scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
