The Poly Parrots hosted the Grant Lancers for the Parrots’ senior night and the teams’ final regular season matchup. The Lancers, who swept the Parrots in September, remained undefeated against Poly, with a three set victory (8-25, 14-25, 18-25). The Parrots conclude the season with a 12-13-1 record, while the Lancers boast a 27-5-4 record, including an undefeated 12-0 run through the East Valley league.

Both teams struggled to find their footing to open the first set, with a 5-5 tie primarily resulting from errors rather than successful attacks. The Lancers found their rhythm as junior Keba Campell facilitated an 8 point scoring run, contributing three blocks and a kill, for Grant to take a 5-13 lead. The Lancers’ scoring didn’t slow through the duration of the set, junior Maliyah Winston recorded two kills and sophomore Jasmin Silva had four consecutive aces to bring the Lancers to set point. The set concluded with a kill from junior Diana Nkruryan, and an 8-25 Lancers victory.

Nkruryan’s contributions continued into the second set, with two kills and a block accounting for three points of the Lancers’ 0-4 opening. Grant’s momentum proved to be too powerful at times, as many Lancer attacks were left too long, putting the Parrots on the board. Poly junior Adriana Tinajero had a block and sophomore Isabella Navarro had an ace, but most of Poly’s scoring was the result of Grant’s offensive errors. The Lancers won the second set 14-25 following an out of bounds call against Poly, to take a two set lead in the match.

Grant’s Winston was the Lancers’ primary offense force in the third set, as her attacks were well placed just barely in bounds. Poly’s Navarro kept the Parrots in the game with a series of kills, though the Lancers maintained their advantage. Junior Alexa Sandoval had an ace to close the gap to 10-14, but the Parrot’s defense didn’t have an answer for Lancers’ attacks. The set ended with a block from Grant’s Campell, and a final score of 18-25, for the Lancers to complete the sweep.

The win solidified Grant’s undefeated in-league record and a top 10 seed in the Los Angeles City Section, as the Lancers’ look forward to continuing to prove themselves in the postseason. Postseason brackets will be available Wednesday, October 23.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
