Samantha Sizemore and Arianna Dominguez score goals in both the first and second halves for their respective teams in the draw for both the Bears and Falcons

On a windy Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Field, the John Burroughs Bears drew with the Crescenta Valley Falcons 1-1 behind Samantha Sizemore’s first half goal and Arianna Dominguez’s second half response in the Pacific League Opener. Prior to the match, Crescenta Valley came off a 3-1 record at the Best of the West tournament while Burroughs drew 3-3 with Immaculate Heart last Friday.

The Falcons never had real chances to score in the first half, but Samantha Sizemore missed a chance to put her team on the board in the 10th minute when the ball went into the hands of Delia Amirganian.  Sizemore later on scored in the 17th minute to put Burroughs up 1-0 with the only score in the first half. The Bears led by one goal at the halftime break.

The Falcons started the second half with a missed chance at goal as Zoe Loppnow missed a chance to score on a free kick in the fifth minute of play in the half. Dominguez came to the rescue and scored a free kick goal in the 28th minute of the second half to tie the match at 1-1. With two minutes left in regulation Geneva Kiefer had a chance to score the game winning goal for the Bears before the final whistle, but her attempt at goal went over the goal post and came up short. Sydney Evans Amandaris had eight saves in net for Burroughs and Delia Amirganian had two saves in goal for Crescenta Valley.

Burroughs goes to 4-4-2 and the draw with Crescenta Valley also gets the Falcons a point with their record now standing at 5-3-1 on the season. Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, January 14th with their second Pacific League games of the season. Burroughs will host Arcadia and Crescenta Valley will host Muir. Burroughs and CV’s next scheduled contest on Friday, January 10th against Hoover and Glendale have been postponed due to the wildfires and bad winds and are expected to be rescheduled at a day to be determined later.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
