Lady Bulldogs cruise by the Lady Mustangs 57-39 and the Burbank Bulldog boys team comes away with a 72-44 victory over the Muir Mustangs boys squad

It was Saturday night hoops for both Burbank boys and girls basketball teams and both Bulldogs squads were victorious. The Lady Bulldogs came away with a 57-39 win over the Lady Mustangs and the Burbank Bulldogs boys squad dominated Muir with a 72-44 win. Leandra Nazarian led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points in their win and Kevin Dabashian led Burbank with 23 points in the victory over Muir. Originally both games were supposed to take place at John Muir High School back on Friday, January 10th but the game was forced to relocate to Burbank High School because of air quality concerns in Pasadena due to the Eaton Fire. Both Burbank teams served as the home team for the game.

The girl’s game kicked off the double-header, and entering the contest the Lady Bulldogs came off a 49-28 blowout victory over Glendale this past Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs came off a narrow 42-38 loss to the Lady Hoover Tornados on Thursday. 

The Lady Bulldogs began the first quarter by going on a 10-2 scoring run. Andrea Aparicio, Yevette Soukiazian, and Nazarian all chipped in with the offense. Taliyah Herdsman and Anabelle Setagian got back-to-back scores to help Burbank end the opening quarter with a 15-2 lead over Muir. 

Jolene Vartanian and Nazarian began the second quarter with back-to-back buckets. Vartanian recorded a layup to start the second quarter and Nazarain nailed a three-point shot from downtown to help the Lady Bulldogs jump out to a 20-2 lead. Amari Wilson made a two-point basket to give the Lady Mustangs their second basket of the contest. Burbank continued to have control of this one-sided contest and ended the first half with a 27-11 lead. 

Nazarian and Wilson traded points to start the third quarter. Nazarian nailed down a three-point shot to start the second half and Wilson scored the two-point basket while being fouled but converted the three-point play at the foul line to make it a 30-13 lead. The Lady Mustangs never had opportunities to close the gap in the contest as The Lady Bulldogs continued to dominate the third quarter taking a 49-23 lead heading into the final quarter of play. 

Willson started the fourth quarter with back-to-back points and Dilynn Long helped contribute to the mini-scoring run for Muir. Burbank continued to put the game away with their strong offense and sealed the 18-point win over Muir. 

Burbank improves to 12-9 overall and 2-2 in Pacific League play and Muir falls to 6-13 overall and 0-2 in Pacific League Play. Both teams will return to action against Crescenta Valley next week. Muir will take on CV on Tuesday, January 28th and Burbank will play CV on Thursday, January 30th. Both games will tip off at 5:15 on their respective dates. 

The boys took to the court to conclude the night. Entering the contest, Burbank came off a blowout 70-42 loss to the Pasadena Bulldogs and Muir had a narrow 49-43 loss to Hoover back on Thursday. 

Magomed Khayuri jump-started the scoring for the Mustangs to open the first quarter and to put them out in front with a 2-0 nothing lead – the only time that Muir led in the game. Kevin Dabashian and Anthony Jawiche scored back-to-back buckets to put the Bulldogs up 5-2 with Jawiche nailing a three-point shot to give Burbank the lead. Dabashian also recorded a three-point shot to increase the Bulldog lead to 8-2. Burbank held Muir to only four points and led comfortably 18-4 to end the first quarter. 

Both the Bulldogs and Mustangs started the second quarter by trading points. Khayuri and Jonathan Ong both scored buckets for their respective teams as Khayuri nailed both foul shots at the line and J. Ong hit a three-point shot to increase the Bulldog’s lead to 21-6. Burbank continued to have control of the contest throughout the second quarter and ended the first half with a 34-20 lead over Muir. 

Burbank continued to dominate in all facets of the game to start the third quarter. Following Kamaran Alborzian’s basket while being fouled with 53 seconds left in the third, both Logan Moore and Areg Aslanyan received double technical fouls. Moore was ejected following his flagrant foul on Alborzian and Aslanyan received a technical foul for his involvement in the brawl following Alborzian’s and-one basket. While Alborzian never got a chance to complete the three-point play, Jonathan Ong made one of his two shot attempts at the foul line for Burbank, and Khayuri made one of two attempts at the foul line for Muir. The Bulldogs led 57-33 entering the final quarter of play. 

The Bulldogs and Mustangs both traded points to begin the final period of play. Cris Ong and Khayuri both scored points for the Mustangs and Bulldogs to start the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs continued to pull away from Muir and came away with a 28-point victory. 

Burbank improves to 15-6 overall and 1-3 in Pacific League play and Muir drops 5-13 overall and 0-2 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Monday, January 27th as Burbank will host Glendale Adventist at 7:00 p.m. and Muir will play another road contest with CV as tip-off will be scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
