The Cleveland Cavaliers had a statement win over the Granada Hills Highlanders on Wednesday night, keeping themselves in the conversation for the top team in the West Valley. The Highlanders entered the match undefeated in the West Valley League, while the Cavaliers had one tally in their loss column, the result of their January 17 meeting with the Highlanders. Cleveland and Granada Hills splitting their in-season series 1-1 opens the door for either team to hold the league title, as well as maintaining the possibility of becoming co-league champions. 

Cleveland sophomore Grace Burgos ignited the Cavaliers’ offense in the first half. Her speed and agility shook the Highlanders’ defense, allowing the Cavaliers to maintain possession for the majority of the half. Junior captain Yesenia Gomez put Cleveland on the board early. Granada Hills keeper Eileen Gamez had a series of impressive saves, but eventually gave up a goal to Burgos, giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead at the break. 

The Highlanders turned on the jets in the second half, with increased hustle from the entire team, especially senior Samantha Chon. Their efforts paid off quickly with an early goal from sophomore Aitana Barajas. Granada Hills’ defenders excelled in cutting off the Cavaliers’ passing lanes, turning their defense into offense, and eventually translating into a second goal for Barajas, to tie the match at 2-2. Cleveland quickly regained their lead, with senior Alexa Monge scoring off a penalty kick midway through the second half. The score remained at 3-2 for the duration of the match, as both teams stepped up their defense and didn’t allow for any further scoring opportunities. 

The Cleveland Cavaliers have two remaining West Valley League matches, first against El Camino Real, followed by Birmingham. The Cavs look to build upon their momentum and add to their six game win streak. The Highlanders close out their season with three West Valley League matches, as they first look to bounce back against Birmingham.
