Zack Guevara drives home Jack Smith to complete the blowout win over the Knights 

The John Burroughs Bears came out on top with a dominant 13-3 win over the Arroyo Knights in the first of a back-to-back in the Dave Moore Tournament, which also served as their season opener. The Bears entered the new season following a 19-7 overall record and an 11-3 record in Pacific League play with a trip to the CIF Southern Section Playoffs a season ago. Arroyo came off their two wins to start the season with blowout victories against Azusa and Sierra Vista. 

Burroughs began the night by putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning as Andrew Cosio, Devin Whittekind, and Zack Guevara drove in runs to get the Bears off to a fast start. Ryan Walsh flirted with a no-hitter for the first three innings until Riley Macmillan broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the top of the fourth inning. The Knights took advantage of the Bear’s bad defense and put up three runs. Walsh ended his outing after 3.2 innings pitched with 3 strikeouts and three runs allowed. 

Kyle Smith came on in relief and got out of the bases-loaded jam by striking out Chris Corona to end the top half of the fourth inning. Smith recorded a three-inning save with his three scoreless innings in relief, which also included a diving play in the top of the sixth inning to take an infield hit away from Andrews Mardueno. Zack Guevara drove home Devin Whittekiend to complete the mercy rule win in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

“Super proud of this group, we have great leaders and it showed tonight. We came out with a plan to attack at the plate early and we did just that,” said Matt Magallon. Magallon praised Ryan Walsh for pitching a great game despite running into trouble in the top of the fourth but has expressed confidence in Walsh for building on this outing. 

Burroughs begins the season 1-0 and Arroyo drops to 2-1. Both teams will return to action and play a second of the back-to-back of the Dave Moore Tournament as Burroughs will take on San Fernando and Arroyo will take on Temple City. The first pitch for both games will take place at 10:00 a.m.
