Jake Rauenswider goes three for four in the victory over the Cowboys 

The John Burroughs Bears came away with their third mercy-rule victory of the season by defeating the Canyon Cowboys by the final of 13-0  on Tuesday night. Jake Rauenswider went three for four in the win. Burroughs came off a 5-1 win over Roosevelt back on Saturday morning and Canyon suffered a blowout 16-4 loss to Sagus last Wednesday. 

Kyle Smith worked around Matt Jimenez’s one-out opposite-field single following his strikeout of Benny Santos by getting Brody Bayliss on a ground out and Ryder Brown on a pop-out in the top of the first inning. The Bears went on an offensive parade putting up 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Rauenswider, Andrew Cosio, and Devin Whittenkiend both had RBIs in the Bears offensive display in the home half of the first. 

Burroughs then added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning with Devin Whittenkiend, Jack Smith, and Slater Mersola driving in runs to make it a 13-0 game. Smith then worked around a two-out single by Santos in the top of the third inning by striking out Matt Jimenez to end the top half of the third. Smith struck out three batters in his three innings of work. 

Both teams were held scoreless for the rest of the game but Canyon continued to waste chances offensively, leaving a total of six runners on base in the contest. The Cowboys wasted a golden chance to end Burroughs’s shutout hopes when Nick Jimenez and Bayliss struck out swinging to end the game in five innings. 

“Offensively we executed our game plan to attack early and carry on. The kids are really buying into the team’s identity in the win over Canyon,” said Matt Magallon. Magallon also said that Rauenswider has become a reliable player, when asked about his three-for-four nights at the plate. 

Burroughs improves to 11-1 and Canyon falls to 2-7. Canyon will play a second of a back-to-back with West Ranch on Wednesday, March 19th at 3:30 p.m. and Burroughs will go on the road to take on Bell on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
