NORTHRIDGE – Before the opening pitch of the Division II City Championship, Taft head coach Megan Kauffman sensed something brewing. Her team had hit its stride at the perfect moment. After surviving the gauntlet of the West Valley League, the Toreadors entered the title game on a tear, winners of four straight, outscoring opponents 50-5. Kauffman praised the team’s late-season transformation. They had never hit, pitched, or defended like this. What was happening, she said, was something special.

Still, the odds were stacked against the Toreadors. Top-seeded Marquez came in boasting a 24-2 (10-0) record. Taft, seeded sixth, was 8-11 (3-7) and missing starting left fielder Kimi Meneses, a freshman sidelined by an emergency appendectomy the day before. On paper, it was David vs. Goliath. On the field, it was something else entirely: Taft became Goliath.

From the start, junior ace Chiara Cioffi set the tone, opening the game by hitting a deep flyout that hinted at the power and confidence coursing through the Toreadors’ dugout. Though they didn’t score in the first, their swagger was unmistakable.

Cioffi followed with a dominant bottom half, painting the zone and keeping Marquez hitters guessing.

In the second inning, Taft struck. Ariyah Williams led off with a chopper up the middle. Freshman Jordy Aardahl worked a walk. Maya Gunderson’s sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position.

Then sophomore Savannah Munoz looped a single over short to drive in Williams. Freshman Macy Gunderson followed with a line-drive RBI single to right. Co-captain Adriana Garcia pushed across a third run on a fielder’s choice. Taft led 3-0.

Marquez came out swinging in the bottom of the second, but Taft’s defense crushed their momentum. A would-be extra-base hit to the right-center gap was stolen by Garcia, who made a full-extension diving catch. Then Aardahl added a highlight-reel backhanded snag at 2nd base and throw to first.

The defensive showcase continued. Up 4-0 in the third, with a runner on second and one out, Aardahl snatched a screaming line drive and doubled off the runner to end the inning. The Toreadors were clicking on every level, and Cioffi’s command on the mound was suffocating.

The Toreadors extended their lead in the fifth. RBI singles by Aardahl and Maya Gunderson made it 6-0. Cioffi blanked Marquez again in the bottom half, aided by a savvy grab from Williams on a tricky pop-up near first base.

The pressure kept mounting in the sixth. A single from Garcia and back-to-back walks by co-captains Katelyn Levine and Alexandra Chase loaded the bases. Then came the most bizarre moment of the day. Williams lofted a pop-up behind second base that dropped in between Marquez fielders on the grass behind second. Two runs scored, but Chase was thrown out at third. Initially believed to be the second out, the umpires confirmed the infield fly rule had been called and Williams was out, but the runs counted. The double play ended the inning but Taft extended its lead to 8-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Marquez finally broke through. A pair of hits and back-to-back errors in right field by Macy Gunderson led to three Gladiator runs. A well-timed mound visit by Kauffman settled Cioffi. The shutout was gone, but the goal remained intact.

Center-fielder Garcia talked to Gunderson, attempting to “pick her up” after the errors left her a bit shellshocked – showing the unity that defined the team’s turnaround. Cioffi and the Toreadors escaped the inning without further damage, holding an 8-3 lead.

After a quiet top of the seventh, Cioffi returned to close out what she started. It was only fitting for a pitcher who’d carried nearly the entire workload this season. Maya Gunderson made a sharp play at third for the first out. Then, in a moment of redemption, Macy Gunderson snagged a screaming liner in right to seal the final out and deliver Taft its first-ever city softball title.

Coach Kauffman was overflowing with pride after the game. “Some of the girls stepped up and played the game of their lives,” she said. “The bottom of the lineup executed. It was a complete team effort. And the defense, one hundred percent, won this game.”

On her pitcher and catcher, she added: “Chiara pitched great, and Chase calls every pitch behind the plate.” But it was the seniors who brought tears to Kauffman’s eyes. “Best senior class. These girls led this team to here. (The seniors) kept their composure (when they started 2-8). They taught (the underclasswomen) so much. They are incredible.”

And the Taft softball program had an incredible turnaround. After starting the season 2-8, the team transformed into one that thrived under pressure. Now city champions, they look to return six key starters—including Cioffi, who came through with another clutch performance when the Toreadors needed it most.
