Bears continue their hot start to the season

The John Burroughs Bears continue their fast start to the season by completing the sweep over the South Hills Huskies (25-11, 25-8, 25-18) in their season home opener following a 3-1 record at the Molten Classic Tournament. The Bears also took home first place in the Division Two silver bracket at the Molten Classic, followed by wins against Culver City, Crossroads, and Marlborough, in four sets, while also falling to Chaminade in five sets. South Hills entered the contest by coming off a four-set loss to Azusa back on Wednesday, August 13th.

Both the Bears and Huskies traded points to start the opening set, with Alyssa San Angelo and Amelia Walsh both recording the game’s first kills for their respective teams. It continued to be a competitive opening frame until Savana Lay, Sienna Lay, Zoe Davis, Lelila Lazaar, and Amelia Walsh helped break the game open to give the Bears an 18-7 lead. The Bears carried that momentum through the end of set one. Payton Froid’s net serve ended the opening set with the Bears coming out on top 25-11.

The Bears went on a 5-1 scoring run in the first part of the second set with Khloe Pavia recording back-to-back kills. Burroughs continued its parade of offense throughout the second set with Sienna Lay recording back-to-back kills to give the Bears a commanding 18-5 lead. Alexandra Hammeke recorded a kill to give Burroughs the victory over South Hills in the second set by a final score of 25-8.

Burroughs took their momentum into the third set and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with Kyle Beveridge and Izabella Hanson scoring points. Beveridge recorded two aces at the beginning of the third set, and Hanson added two kills. Johnson also had two aces to help Burroughs complete the sweep of South Hills with a 25-18 victory.

Burroughs improves to 4-1 and South Hills drops to 2-1. Burroughs will take on Granada Hills at home on Thursday, August 21st, at 3:45 p.m., and South Hills will host Bonita on Wednesday, August 20th, at 4:30 p.m.

Hi great article but please make sure you are spelling Izzi’s name correctly. It is not Isabella Johnson, her name is Izabela Hanson. Thank you!

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
