Burbank sweeps Hoover on senior night

Bulldogs win season series with the Tornados

The Burbank Bulldogs kept their playoff hopes alive with a big 3-0 sweep of the Hoover Tornados (25-15, 25-18, 25-10). Anya Oganian and Gabrielle Jarrah contributed key points in the third set to help Burbank complete the sweep of the Hoover Tornados. Back on Tuesday, Hoover suffered a sweeping loss to Crescenta Valley, while Burbank was swept by Arcadia.

Before the opening serve, four members of the graduating senior class of 2026 from the Bulldogs were honored and celebrated in a pregame ceremony. Those four seniors are Anya Oganian, Reagan Shuchur, Grace O’Connor, and Lorin Azizian.

“Our volleyball program here at Burbank High School has meant a lot to me over the past four years I’ve been a part of it,” said O’Connor, the Bulldogs’ team captain. “I think that I’ve learned not only volleyball and physical skills, but mental ones as well. It’s taught me discipline, patience, and how to push through tough moments, on and off the court. My experience here has helped me grow as a player and as a person, and I honestly wouldn’t be who I am today without it.” O’Connor also added that it was a special feeling, with it being the end of their high school volleyball careers.

On the volleyball court, Azizan began the opening set with the game’s first kill for the Bulldogs. Sona Yeganyan then responded with back-to-back points to give the Tornados a 2-1 lead. Oganian responded and tied the score at two with a kill. The Bulldogs ended up taking control of the opening set with Madi Yosh recording a kill to end the first set with Burbank easily winning set one 25-15.

O’Connor recorded three straight aces, which led to the Bulldogs going on a 7-2 scoring run to start the second set. She later added two more aces for a total of four in the set. The Bulldogs ended up taking set two, 25-18.

Burbank began the third set by going up 3-0 with points by Oganian and Lorin Azizan. Sophia Trejo Galvez and Yeganyan both recorded back-to-back points to tie the game at three. Oganian and Gabrielle Jarrah both scored to get the Bulldogs to set point, and Ellen Royo hit the ball out of bounds, which resulted in Burbank completing the sweep over Hoover.

“I’m very proud of the four seniors in Grace O’Connor, Anya Oganian, Reagan Shuchur, and Lorin Azizan. They’ve been through so much with the program going through coaching changes, and they got what they deserved,” said Carmen Camacho Platas. Camacho Platas added that she was happy with how the girls were aggressive with their serves and that the Bulldogs ended up sweeping Hoover instead of it going to five.

Burbank improves to 9-12 overall and 4-5 in Pacific League play, with Hoover dropping to 1-10 overall and 1-8 in Pacific League play. Burbank competed in the Crescenta Valley Girls Varsity Volleyball Tournament this weekend, dropping matches to Saugus and San Marino in 2-0 sweeps. Hoover returns to action on Tuesday, September 30th, with a home game against Burroughs at 3:45 p.m.
