Lengthy rebuild still rolls on heading into the new season for the Bears 

The John Burroughs Bears enter the new season with a new head coach for a third season in a row as the Jason Weatherall Era officially begins. Last season the Bears finished with the worst record in the Pacific League at 5-22 overall record and 0-8 in Pacific League Play. Weatherall spent last season as a varsity assistant coach with the St. Francis Golden Knights with head coach Todd Wolfson before coming to Burroughs to take over the program. Weatherall will be tasked to guide the Bears through what could be a lengthy rebuild heading into the new season. 

The coaching staff under Weatherall will feature Erick Willis (head junior varsity coach), Brandon Jimenez (head frosh Coach) and varsity assistant coaches, Scott Koulavaris, Marvin Walker and Justin Waters. Koulavaris is a Burroughs boys basketball lifer having served under multiple staffs with Weatherall head coach number six. Justin Waters is a graduate of Burroughs, having played on the Burroughs Indians team that won the Pacific League title in 1999 under Art Sullivan. Walker most recently worked at La Salle High School and has a work history with Weatherall when they worked together with the boys basketball team at Maranatha High School.

Under Weatherall the players to watch out for this season will be seniors Tegan Bradford (Last year’s Pacific League’s Honorable Mention) Evan Lanier, Justin Herrera (Hoover Transfer), and Elliott Lawrence. Due to transfer protocol Herrera will not be eligible to play due to the 30 day sit out period. 

The Burroughs Bears will begin the 2025-2026 season on Friday, November 21st against Pacifica Christian from Santa Monica at the Warrior Showcase at Heritage Christian High School. They will also participate in two tournaments on the week of thanksgiving as they will take on Chatsworth at the North Hollywood showcase with top scheduled for 3:30 p.m. along with taking on Newbury Park on Friday, November 28th at 1:30 p.m.and De Sol on Saturday, November 29th at 10:30 a.mat the Coach C Legacy Showcase at Santa Clara High School. Burroughs will also be part of the Pacific Oxnard Showcase on Saturday. December 20th and then the St. Francis Hoopfest from Friday, December 26th-Tuesday December 30th. 

“This is extremely exciting to begin this opportunity as the Burroughs Bears boys basketball head coach,” said Weatherall. He also talked about getting to know the players and how he has gotten a lot of insight from the coaching staff that was retained from last season on how things are run at Burroughs High School.

The Bears will begin Pacific League play on Friday, December 12th against the powerhouse Pasadena Bulldogs at Pasadena High School with tip off scheduled for 6:45 p.m. The home opener will be against the Crescenta Valley Falcons on Tuesday, December 16th at 6:45 p.m. The crosstown rival hoop showdown with the Burbank Bulldogs will take place on Thursday, January 15th at Burbank High School and then again on Tuesday, February 3rd at John Burroughs High School with both games slated for 6:45 p.m. The Burbank Burroughs Game on February 3rd will feature Senior Night Ceremonies from the Burroughs Bears boys basketball team.
