Lady Bears are 5-1 in their last six games since their 2-6 start




The John Burroughs Lady Bears have been playing their best basketball in their most recent stretch, winning five of their last six contests. The latest of which was a full team victory over the Heritage Christian Lady Warriors with a 58-31 victory. Jessica Mena led the Lady Bears 11 points in the win. Entering the contest Burroughs came away with a comfortable 51-27 win over Santa Monica, while Heritage Christian escaped with a one-point win over Long Beach Millikan on the first day of the West Coast Holiday Tournament.



Burroughs began the first quarter by going on a 10-2 scoring run which came after Heritage Christian committed a shot clock violation to start the game. Mena, Izzy Amaroso and Grace Barton led the charge for the Lady Bears in the scoring run.



Naomi Karzair and Allyson Nagatuska both scored back-to-back points to potentially give the Lady Warriors some hope of closing the gap with Burroughs, but Mena and Amaroso responded with consecutive baskets of their own to increase the Lady Bears lead to 11. Burroughs continued its offensive explosion throughout the opening quarter and led 25-8 entering the second quarter.



Nagatuska and Rielle Waddell traded baskets to begin the second quarter, and Heidi Speague scored a two-point shot to make it a 27-12 game. Alyssa Pracha then nailed back-to-back three point baskets to increase the Burroughs lead to 21 points.The Lady Bears took that lead into the halftime break.


Following halftime, the Lady Warriors began the second half by committing their second shot clock violation of the game with the Lady Bears defense stifling them to start the third quarter. Waddell and Barton recorded consecutive points to help Burroughs lead 43-17. Speague responded with a three-point basket to make it a 43-20 game. The Lady Bears dominated the second half to seal the 27-point win over the Lady Warriors.


“I thought we did a great job offensively with our ball movement along with making our shots, and we also rebounded the ball well and played solid defense.” said Vicky Oganyan. Oganyan also added that this was a team win for Burroughs over Heritage Christian.



Burroughs improves to 6-6 and Heritage Christian falls to 5-8. Both the Lady Bears and Lady Warriors will return to action on Monday, December 29th on the third day of the West Coast Holiday Tournament. Burroughs will take on Santa Paula at 7:30 p.m. and Heritage Christian will take on Arleta at 3:00 p.m.
