Marco Santiago Dorn completes the sweep of the Wolfpack with a game ending kill

The John Burroughs Bears began their quest for back-to-back Pacific League titles by sweeping the Claremont Wolfpack (31-29, 25-17, 25-19). Marco Santiago Dorn’s match winning kill to end set three sealed the 3-0 sweep. Noah Duffield led the team 16 kills and Riley Brinton led the team with 16 assists.

Santiago Dorn hit the ball out of bounds to start the match, giving the Wolfpack an early 1-0 lead. The Bears got the point back following a sideout to tie the score.

While the opening set provided a lot of entertainment for the fans, the teams went wire to wire with no clear advantage for either side. Jack Szaras and Noah Duffield recorded back-to-back kills to help Burroughs take the first set 31-29.

Alex Hoffmesiter and Duffield began set two by recording kills for their respective teams. Jack Szaras gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with a kill. The first portion of the second set was as tight as the first before Burroughs took control following the set being tied at 11-11. The Bears outscored the Wolfpack 14-6 the rest of the way with Santiago Dorn ending set two with a kill for the 2-0 lead.

The Wolfpack began the third set with a 7-2 run with points by Junior Guzman, Cooper Longeyear and Justin Yazman. Santiago Dorn stopped the scoring run with a kill with Claremont still leading 7-3.

Following Santiago Dorn breaking the run, Burroughs clawed their way back into the game with an offensive explosion as Duffield, Brinton, Skyy Alston, and Szaras led the charge. Santiago Dorn came up big again with his match-ending kill to complete the sweep.

“It was good for us to struggle a bit since the guys started off with first game jitters in the opening set,” said Joel Brinton, “even though we did not play a clean slate of volleyball, but it was nice for our guys to stay calm throughout the game.”

Last season’s Pacific League Champion Bears finished with a 30-7 overall record and an undefeated 10-0 in league play. That led to an appearance in the CIF Southern Section playoffs where they were eliminated by St Margaret’s for the second year in a row. The Bears lost to the Tartans in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs.

Burroughs starts the season 1-0 and Claremont falls to 0-1. Burroughs will begin the two-day Redondo Tournament on Friday February 20th, with Claremont playing their second game of the season on the road at Downey High School at 3:15 p.m.
