Joseph Tapia earns the save in the win for the Spartans


Julian Recinos began the bottom of the third inning with a leadoff infield single. He advanced to second following Tomas Angel’s groundout to pitcher James Borbon and moved to third on a wild pitch, 90 feet away from tying the game.



Recinos scored the tying run on another wild pitch by Borbon to even the game at 2. Ryland LeClair followed with a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Luca Kuiper and Carter Williamson struck out swinging in back-to-back plate appearances, leaving LeClair stranded at second to end the inning.


Joseph Tapia recorded a two-out RBI single to drive home Ivan Quintero and put the Spartans ahead 3-2. Williamson worked around a bases-loaded jam by getting Jacob Diaz to pop out to shortstop Recinos to end the top of the fourth. Williamson pitched four innings, striking out five and walking one while allowing one earned run, two unearned runs and six hits.


The Bulldogs continued to struggle offensively in the fourth inning and could not capitalize after Anthony Sanchez was hit by a pitch.



David Torres drew a pinch-hit walk after entering for Patrick Liggins. Liggins re-entered as a pinch runner.


Tapia was hit by a pitch from Sebastian Aguirre to put runners on first and second. Joshua Talevara drove home Liggins with an RBI single to extend Schurr’s lead to 4-2.


Aguirre worked around a two-out walk to Justin Trueman by getting Mateo Macis to ground out to third baseman Kuiper to end the sixth. Williamson led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and stole second.


Aguirre, Mason Schwartz and Sanchez were unable to bring him home as Aguirre popped out to first baseman Isaiah Trevino and Schwartz and Sanchez struck out swinging. Kris Haddad retired the side in order in relief to give the Bulldogs one final opportunity.


Andru Machado led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, giving Burbank hope of a comeback. Recinos grounded out to shortstop Elias Villalpando while attempting to leg out an infield single, prompting a brief umpire discussion before the out call stood.


Angel grounded out to Tapia, leaving Burbank down to its final out. LeClair drew a two-out walk to extend the inning.


Grady Gibbs pinch ran for LeClair as the tying run at first. Kuiper came to the plate representing the winning run but struck out swinging, leaving two on to end the game.



Burbank fell to 0-2 while Schurr improved to 1-1. Both teams return to action Thursday, Feb. 26. Schurr will face Flintridge Prep, while Burbank’s next opponent is to be determined. Both games are scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
