Bears extend their wins streak to six



The John Burroughs Bears completed a walk-off win off over the Marshall Barristers behind Slater Mersola’s game-winning RBI bunt single to help the Bears extend their win streak to six games.


Last week, Burroughs completed a two-game sweep of the Glendale Nitros with a mercy rule win in the second game, 18-1. Marshall suffered a 4-3 loss to South El Monte Saturday, March 7.


Andrew Torres and Freddy Hernandez Robles began the top of the first inning with back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Barristers an early 2-0 lead.



Theo Gara worked around the consecutive doubles to Torees and Hernandez Robles by striking out Daniel Gonzalez looking and getting Damian Vasques on a pop out to first baseman Devin Whittekiend to end the top half of the first.



Elliott Ross got on base with a leadoff single to start the bottom of the first inning. Slater Mersola grounded into a fielder’s choice with Ross being out at second base.


Devin Whittekiend was unable to advance Mersola when he popped out to first base. Mersola was then picked off to end the first inning. Gara bounced back on the mound in the top of the second inning with a one-two-three inning.


Jake Rauwensider got the Bears on the board with a solo home run to make it a 2-1 game. Kai Wilson reached base with a one-out single and then stole second base to reach scoring position, a base hit from the game being tied at two.



Brady Powers and Nate Sepulveda ended up failing to drive Wilson home from second to end the second inning. Powers flew out to the left fielder Daniel Deer Gregorian and Sepulveda grounded out to pitcher Damian Vasquez.



Jake Rauwensider put the Bears out in front 3-2 in the fourth inning with a two-run home run. Burroughs failed to capitalize with opportunities to add an insurance run following Brady Power’s two-out triple. Nate Sepulveda struck out looking to end the bottom of the fourth inning.


Clayton Polisky tied the game at 3-3 after recording a two-out double. Polisky came in to score and tie the game on a wild pitch from Nathan Bartolo. Bartolo avoided more damage by striking out Daniel Gonzalez swinging to end the top of the fifth inning.


Junior Veloz came in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning and retired the side in order. Bartolo worked around a one-out walk to Daniel Guzman by getting Israel Guerrero on a double play to end the top of the sixth inning.


Rauwensider hit a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth, looking to spark a late rally. Tru Binaku and Jack Smith failed to drive home Rauwensider as they both grounded out in their plate appearances to end the sixth inning.


The Barristers put up two runs in the top of the seventh inning with Jacob Gutteriez reaching base with an RBI bases loaded walk. Damian Vasquez recorded a-pinch hit two-out RBI single to give Marshall a 5-3 lead. Daniel Guzman grounded out to shortstop Elliott Ross to end the top of the seventh.


The Bears began the bottom of the seventh inning with a leadoff walk from Kayson Montgomery.


Montgomery advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Nicholas Allen. Zack Guevara drove in Kayson Montgomery with a pinch-hit RBI double to make it a one run game. Guevara represented the tying run at second base.


Logan Manoikas laid down a bunt to advance Guevara to third base, putting him 90 feet away from tying the game – Manoikas reached base on the play. Manoikas then stole second base, representing the winning run in scoring position.

Elliott Ross tied the game at five with an RBI sacrifice fly driving in Guverera with Manoikas reaching third base. Slater Mersola drove home Manoikas with a walk-off RBI bunt single with the Bears faithful happy with a walk off win.

Burroughs improves to 7-1 and Marshall drops to 2-4 on the season. Burroughs will take on Sonora in a marquee non league matchup on St. Patrick’s Day at 3:00 p.m. Marshall will return to action next Saturday against Horizon Christian at the Anaheim Lions Tournament at Katella High School.
