Espinoza takes over the program after serving as junior varsity head coach for the last two years

The John Burroughs High School Girls Soccer Program will have a new face roaming the sidelines as Ryan Espinoza takes over for Robert Sanchez as the program’s next head coach. Sanchez recently stepped down from the position after two years. Espinoza worked under two head coaches with the Burroughs Girls Soccer Program as he served with Brady Riggs and Sanchez.

Most recently, Espinoza served as the head junior varsity coach under Sanchez for the past two seasons before being promoted to the top spot.

Last season Espinoza was part of the coaching staff with the Bears that finished third in the Pacific League with a 7-4-3 record. Burroughs’ 9-9-5 overall record earned the Bears a playoff berth, but they lost to Fullerton in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division three playoffs on penalty kicks.

The coaching staff under Ryan Espinoza will feature junior varsity head coach Oz Chicas and assistant coach Laura Sage. “I’m very excited about the foundation that has already been established,” said the newly promoted Bears head girls soccer coach. “The program has shown tremendous amount of growth in recent years and I look forward to growing it in my own way.” Espinoza also added that he had a smile on his face when he was announced as the program’s next head coach.

Under Espinoza the players that will be on the lookout for the upcoming season are seniors Geneva Keifer (returning first team all Pacific League) Jazmine Varella (returning second team all Pacific League), and Isabella Estrada (reigning Pacific League’s honorable mention).

John Burroughs High School Principal Kenny Knoop issued a statement on Ryan Espinoza being named the next head coach of the Burroughs girl’s soccer program.

“Coach Espinoza is excited to join JBHS as the new Head Coach for Girls Varsity Soccer. He brings over 25 years of experience as both a player and coach. He is committed to building a program defined by hard work, integrity, and a relented mindset. His focus is creating an environment where his athletes are pushed outside of their comfort zones to reach their full potential. He shared that it is a privilege to lead the Bears into his inaugural season of the Rio-Pacific League. Coach Espinoza, welcome to the Bears Family!”

The John Burroughs Bears girls soccer team will spend the summer training for the upcoming season and then ramp up the practices when the 2026-2027 season begins in November.
