It was a noteworthy week with road upsets galore in the San Fernando Valley. Cleveland stamped their top spot with a huge win at Birmingham, while the East Valley was turned on its ear when the #6 team on the list won a tough road contest Saturday night. Here are the VST power rankings heading into Week Seven of the regular season schedule:

  1. Cleveland Cavaliers (6-0)
The Cleveland Cavaliers put the City Section on notice by doubling down on their impressive road win at Crenshaw last week, ending Birmingham’s 38-game winning streak in the West Valley. The Cavs have had a dream start to the season, and more could be on the horizon.
  2. Kennedy Cougars (6-0)
Kennedy handled business at home versus a tough Panorama bunch last week. They’ll have their work cut out for them when a red-hot Tim Tanner Jr. and the Sylmar Spartans pay a visit Friday night.
  3. Poly Parrots (5-1)
The Parrots’ swagger and confidence are off the charts as they enter Friday night’s contest on a five-game win streak. The noise will only get louder if they can upend the defending East Valley champions, North Hollywood, on the road this week.
  4. Granada Hills Highlanders (4-2)
The Highlanders have found their groove after a rollercoaster start to the season. Big test on the road at Chatsworth this week.
  5. Taft Toreadors (4-2)
The Toreadors came into the season believing they could be major players in the West Valley title race. If they could follow in Cleveland’s footsteps and beat Birmingham, they could be well on their way.
  6. Arleta Mustangs (5-1)
The Mustangs made a statement in the East Valley, taking down North Hollywood on the road Saturday night to move to 3-0 in league play. They control their own destiny in a wide-open race for the EVL title.
  7. Birmingham Patriots (1-5)
The Patriots had a tough week after suffering their first loss in the West Valley since 2017. All good things come to an end, but there is still plenty of meat left on the bone this season. The Pats are still a force to be reckoned with.
  8. Panorama Pythons (5-2)
Panorama put up a valiant fight against Kennedy last week, but fell short. Brandon Hernandez still had a monster game, though, and expect more of the same when they hit the road to face San Fernando this week.
  9. Chatsworth Chancellors (4-2)
The Chancellors drop a few spots in the rankings after coming up short on the scoreboard at Taft last week. But when one door closes, another great opportunity knocks in the West Valley. They will look to rebound versus Granada Hills at home this week.
  10. North Hollywood Huskies (3-3)
The Huskies are licking their wounds after falling just short Saturday night against Arleta. The Huskies aren’t out of the race just yet. In fact, a win over Poly this week puts them right back in the mix for the EVL championship.

Quote of the week

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.“
