While the top of the rankings stayed the same this week, a Valley Mission squad reenters the list after notching their fifth straight win of the season. A City Section giant reenters the top five after a statement road win last week, while an East Valley title hopeful holds their position on the list after surviving a scare. Here are the VST power rankings heading into Week Seven of the regular season schedule:

  1. Cleveland Cavaliers (7-0)
The Cleveland Cavaliers kept their foot on the pedal last week, posting their second win in the West Valley at home over El Camino Real. The Cavs remain unbeaten this season and remain the frontrunner to win their first-ever West Valley League title.
  2. Kennedy Cougars (7-0)
The Cougars put on another impressive performance to remain unbeaten this season. They will look to keep it up as Canoga Park looms tonight.
  3. Poly Parrots (6-1)
The Parrots keep getting better every week, which is bad news for the rest of the East Valley. They have a tricky matchup at home against Monroe this week
  4. Chatsworth Chancellors (5-2)
The Chancellors bounced back from a close road loss at Taft by handling business against a rugged Granada Hills team last week. Chatsworth still believes it can win the West Valley by beating the frontrunners in the last two weeks of the season. That depends on whether they can get past a feisty ElCo team tonight.
  5. Birmingham Patriots (2-5)
The Pats responded to their first loss in nearly a decade in the West Valley by trouncing Taft on the road last week. Birmingham looks to keep the momentum going at home versus Granada Hills tonight.
  6. Arleta Mustangs (6-1)
The Mustangs didn’t win last week; they survived. Hey, sometimes in league play that’s what it takes. The Mustangs can keep control of their destiny in the East Valley League if they can beat Verdugo Hills at home this afternoon.
  7. Granada Hills Highlanders (4-3)
Granada Hills took a close loss last week, but they’ll still be a tough out the rest of the way. The Highlanders face a tough road test at Birmingham this week.
  8. Taft Toreadors (4-3)
The Toreadors ran into a buzzsaw versus an angry Birmingham last week, but the West Valley League offers no rest for the weary. They’ll be on the road at Cleveland this week.
  9. San Fernando Tigers (5-2)
The Tigers reenter the power rankings this week after a quality home win over Panorama last week. The Tigers did as good a job as anybody has slowing down Brandon Hernandez last week. They’ll have to contend with Tim Tanner Jr. on the road at Sylmar this week.
  10. Verdugo Hills Dons (5-2)
The Verdugo Hills Dons have been a tough team to read this season. What is indisputable, though, is that they are hard to stop on offense. Jered Smith is putting up numbers this season. They will need him to step up again versus Arleta if the Dons want to stay in the running for the East Valley title

Quote of the week

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.“
