Bears come off back-to-back sweeps with Hoover and Burbank

The John Burroughs Bears take round 1 of the crosstown rivalry series as they swept the Burbank Bulldogs in 3 sets. Tawnie Ohrt had a big 2nd set with 1 kill and 3 aces as she contributed big time in the win over Burbank. Ohrt led the Bears with 7 kills in the win against Burbank. Addison Ritter came up big with kills in sets 2 and 3 for Burbank.

Both teams came into the contest with momentum, as Burroughs swept Hoover while Pasadena swept Burbank before both teams met for the first time this season. The first set lived up to the hype as both teams brought the energy to excite the crowd. Raquel Fox got the scoring going for Burbank as Burbank took a 6-5 lead in set 1 after misplays gifted Burbank and Burroughs points. The Bears took the first set 25-22 as they ended Burbank’s comeback hopes. The Bulldogs dropped the 2nd set 17-25 but sophomore Grace O’Connor recorded an ace along with senior Ally Molloy to keep the Bulldogs in the game but fell short in that set. Burbank tried to come up with solutions in the 3rd set but couldn’t force a 4th set.

Burbank falls to 1-15 overall, and 1-7 in Pacific League play, while Burroughs remains in 3rd place with a 10-7 record and 5-3 in Pacific League play. “We are playing a little bit better, had ups and downs the last few weeks, it’s nice to be on a roll,” said Burroughs head coach Edwin Real. Real also admitted that Tawnie Ohrt played a great game despite having a bit of an injury scare earlier in the game. “I liked the way that they kept their energy up and worked together,” said Burbank varsity head coach Morgan Bolger. Bolger also admitted that the effort of the team was there against Burroughs.

Burroughs will take on Glendale in a marquee Pacific League showdown on Tuesday at home which will be a 3:45 PM start on Tuesday, September 26th while Burbank will play 2 games at the Crescenta Valley Tournament in CV on Friday night as they will take on Mayfield(Pasadena) at 5 PM along with a showdown with Maranatha(Pasadena) at 7 PM. Burbank’s next home game will be against John Muir High School in Pasadena which will also be on Tuesday, September 26th as they will serve at 3:30 PM. Round 2 of the Burbank-Burroughs rivalry will take place on Thursday, October 12th at John Burroughs High School which will be a 6 PM start as it will be senior night for the four seniors of Burroughs.
