Owen Everhart recorded a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds in the win 

The John Burroughs Bears have started the new season with a 2-0 start by coming away with a 58-40 victory over the Canoga Park Hunters behind Owen Everhart’s double-double. Everhart was the leading scorer for the Bears with 28 points, but also recorded 11 rebounds 2 steals 1 assist and 1 block in the win. Canoga Park entered following a 0-4 run in the de Toledo Tournament, while Burroughs came off an impressive 55-39 win over Northridge Academy to start off the Darryl Carter Era on the right foot. 

Both teams had a low-scoring first quarter with the Hunters jumping out early with a 4-0 lead with Jayshaun Manary recording both of his foul shots to start the game and then Samuel Rozier scoring an easy two-point shot. Owen Everhart got the Bears on the board by recording both of his foul shots and then Eliot Lawrence tied the score at four by nailing both of his free throw shots. Manary gave the Hunters the lead by recording the two-point shot being fouled plus the three-point play conversion at the line to give them a 7-4 lead. Everhart scored two straight two point shots to give Burroughs a 10-7 lead. Nicolas Meza helped the Bears end the first quarter by recording a steal and a two-point layup to give them a 14-10 lead heading into the second quarter. 

Everhart continued his strong scoring in the second quarter as he nailed both of his foul shots and a two-point jump shot to give the Bears an eight-point lead. Burroughs dominated the second quarter which resulted in a 31-23 lead over Canoga Park to end the first half. 

The Hunters at one point cut the lead to seven after the halftime break with Samuel Rozier scoring a two-point shot while being fouled but did not convert the three-point play. Evan Lanier got the lead for the Bears back to 10 with a three-point shot of his own and helped Burroughs end the third quarter with a 48-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Bears put the game away in the final quarter with contributions by Lanier, Everhart, and Cedric Valdez all chipping in offensively. 

“I’m proud that they fought through adversity to get the win and we took advantage of opportunities that were given and hopefully we will continue to build on it,” said Bears coach Darryl Carter. Carter also stated that the resiliency showed throughout the game when there were times when things weren’t easy during the course of the game. 

Canoga Park falls to 0-5 on the season and will look for answers to get in the win column when they return to action on Monday, November 25th when they host Newbury Park with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Burroughs Bears will look to continue their undefeated streak when they take on Sherman Oaks CES of Reseda at the North Hollywood Showcase in the second of their back-to-back on Saturday, November 23rd with tip-off slated for 11:30 a.m.
