Jacob Saldana records shutout in win for the Bears

Following a tough 4-1 loss to St. Francis last Friday, the John Burroughs Bears bounced back with a 3-0 win over Schurr behind Jacob Saldana’s shutout in goal. Schurr came off a 2-0 win over Mayfair, also last Friday.

The Bears had missed chances at goal in the first half as Seven Elkin missed opportunities to get the ball in the net in both the first and eight minutes of the opening half. Winston Bromhead missed a headed shot in the 12th minute of the half. Juan Cervantes also missed a goal chance for Schurr in the 16th minute of play. Jordan Seas got the scoring going for the Bears with the game’s first goal to put Burroughs up 1-0 in the 24th minute. Both teams never had real opportunities to score towards the end of the first half and the Bears led by one goal heading into the halftime break.

Alex Loera started the second half by missing a chance to score in the fifth minute but also missed another chance in the 25th minute. Seas tried to score his second of the game but his shot went wide right in the seventh minute. Schurr also missed chances to score as Eric Vergara and Melvin Romero both missed opportunities in both the 12th and 21st minutes of action. The Spartans had no luck with scoring goals throughout the contest. Joseph Ramos and Winston Bromhead helped Burroughs get insurance with their goals occurring in the 29th and 30th minutes of the second half.

Jacob Saldana of Burroughs recorded three saves and allowed no goals in net. Jose Aguiano and Conoor Lam shared the playing time in goal for Schurr. Aguiano allowed one goal and made two saves in the first half. Lam came on in relief of Aguiano and had three saves while allowing two goals in the second half. “It was a great game for us where the boys worked hard in the win.” said Makan Afzali.

Burroughs improves to 2-2 while Schurr drops to 3-7-2 on the season. Burroughs will return to action on Thursday, December 19th with a road contest against Brentwood with kick off slated for 5:00 p.m. Schurr will get back at it in the new year with a home game against San Gabriel on Monday, January 13th at 5:30 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
