The playoff intensity soared through the air in the usually packed Sierra Canyon gym, as the Trailblazers took on the Heritage Christian Warriors in a Friday night Valentine’s Day main event. In a battle between two top-75 teams in the nation, the competitors on the floor fought hard in an emotional contest to gain an edge in the Pool Play Round of the CIF Southern Section Open Division Playoffs. 

Heritage Christian caught fire from the perimeter in the first half, draining eight triples en route to a 39-28 halftime lead. Trailing by as much as sixteen points in the third quarter, Sierra Canyon locked in on the defensive side of the ball with suffocating ball pressure through their half-court press. Sparked by a 10-0 run in the third quarter, the Trailblazers pulled away in the fourth quarter with 17 points from four-star senior standout Maximo Adams along with a double-double from senior Bryce Cofield.  

Following a thrilling three-point overtime victory over Redondo Union in their first pool play contest, the Trailblazers were caught by surprise with an avalanche from the three-point line from the Warriors in the first half. Desperate for a win after losing their first postseason contest, Senior Forward Tae Simmons led the offensive charge for the Warriors as he scored 11 of his 18 points in the first half. Heritage Christian drained eight three-pointers in the first half, with Sierra Canyon unable to stop the bleeding from behind the arch before heading into the locker room. 

As the home crowd looked on anxiously, Heritage Christian returned to the court with five quick points to give them a 44-28 advantage early in the third quarter. Facing a postseason letdown on their home floor, Sierra Canyon tightened up the defensive screws through their half-court press. Seniors Gavin Hightower and Bryce James set the tone defensively through their continuous ball pressure leading to turnovers from the Warriors. A three-point play from Cofield sparked what amounted to a 17-4 third quarter run with five different Trailblazers making an impact on the scoreboard. 

In addition to their defensive effort, Cofield and Adams brought the physicality on the offensive glass in the second half leading to second-chance opportunities for Sierra Canyon. Both teams bargained with the officiating throughout the third quarter, culminating in a controversial call at the end of the period, as Simmons was called for a foul on what he argued was an incredible block on an Adams layup attempt. Adams subsequently made both free throws, cutting the Heritage Christian lead to two as the game headed to the fourth quarter. 

The game remained scoreless in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, with each team throwing their bodies around for every loose ball. Cofield continued to win extra possessions on the glass, as the first points of the quarter were courtesy of a putback from a third consecutive offensive rebound. His tip-in coincided with an 8-0 run to give Sierra Canyon a 54-48 lead with under a half-quarter left to play. 

Heritage Christian trimmed the deficit to two after earning points on consecutive offensive possessions. Sierra Canyon Head Coach Andre Chevalier called a timeout with 2:31 remaining in the game, as his players huddled for the final stretch. Following the timeout, Hightower drove to the basket for an excellent finish through contact along with the foul. After converting the three-point play, he earned a steal on the defensive end leading to a fast break layup to give the Trailblazers a seven point lead. 

Closing the game on an 11-2 run, Adams brought the crowd to its feet with back-to-back high flying dunks, catching a lob from Hightower with two hands for the latter slam. Adams and Cofield hyped up the Sierra Canyon Student Section, as the crowd sang a rendition of the Steam song “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” to their opponents as time expired. Cofield filled up the stat-sheet with 15 points, 12 rebounds while Hightower finished with 13 points. Sierra Canyon will have two more contests remaining in CIF Pool Play on the road against St. John Bosch and Roosevelt this upcoming week, as the playoff picture continues to take shape.
