The Glendale Community College Vaqueros added a sixteenth game to their win streak on Saturday, defeating the LA Valley College Monarchs. The victory was the Vaqueros’ twelfth straight Western State Conference win, maintaining Glendale’s undefeated record, and guaranteeing at least a shared WSC South title. 

Madison Guerrero (11 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal) led the Monarchs on a 10-0 run to open the game, taking advantage of a weak point in Glendale’s defense at the rim. The energy shifted for Glendale when Shadel Ffrench (8 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks) came off the bench, offering rim protection as well as putting the Vaqueros’ first 4 points on the board. Glendale answered with an 11-point run of their own to take the lead. The Vaqueros maintained their lead throughout the second quarter, but the game remained in reach for the Monarchs at halftime, 25-20. 

The Vaqueros exploded with a 39 point third quarter, effectively sealing the victory shortly into the second half. Malia Ulery had 13 of her team high 17 points in the third quarter. Ulery also contributed a team high 13 rebounds, helping Glendale to out-rebound LA Valley 39-22. The Vaqueros dominating the glass meant the Monarchs were held to only two offensive rebounds, eliminating their second chance scoring opportunities. Glendale led 64-29 after three quarters, outscoring the Monarchs by 30 in the third. 

The commanding lead meant the fourth quarter was run by both teams’ bench units. LA Valley’s leading scorer came from the bench, with Leilani Richards dropping 14. Though both teams played hard until the final buzzer, the Vaqueros lead hardly wavered, as they closed the game out 72-49. 

Glendale takes on Antelope Valley on Wednesday and Citrus College on Friday. The Vaqueros only need one win to guarantee a sixth straight conference title. LA Valley will look to bounce back on Friday at home against Bakersfield.
