Burroughs goes to 3-1 to start the season
The John Burroughs Bears ended their run in the Dave Moore Tournament with a dominant 8-0 win over the Verdugo Hills Dons. Ryan Walsh threw a no-hitter in the win for the Bears. Burroughs entered the contest fresh off a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Temple City on a walk-off hit by Jake Rauenswider and Verdugo Hills came off a 2-0 loss to San Marino back on Tuesday, February 25th.
Ryan Walsh started off the night by retiring the side in order in the top half of the first inning. The Bears offense then took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Burroughs got on the board first with two gift runs. Elliot Ross and Elvis Martinez both scored runs on wild pitches from JC Ramirez.
While both teams were held scoreless in the second inning, Burroughs increased their lead to three on a two-out RBI single from Slater Mersola driving home Jack Smith from second base. Walsh continued his dominance on the mound and put up four scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Burroughs continued to add more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put them up 7-0 over Verdugo Hills. The Dons only had two men on base in the game and never had a runner in scoring position in the contest.
The Bears added one more run on the board as Logan Drossin scored on a throwing error from Isaiah Guevara who was trying to pick him off from third base in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ryan Walsh retired the side in the top of the seventh inning to complete the no-hitter for the Bears. Walsh struck out 11 batters, walked two and allowed no runs in the win.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday, March 1st, as Burroughs will take on South Pasadena on the road at 10:00 a.m. and Verdugo Hills’ will face Village Christian in tournament action, also at 10:00 a.m .
