John Burroughs High School hosted a special signing day in a lunchtime event on Tuesday afternoon as four Burroughs High student-athletes officially signed their papers to take the next step in their athletic journeys.
Kyle Smith

A four-year member of the John Burroughs Bears baseball program and a three-year member of the Bears varsity team, Kyle Smith will be taking his talents to play baseball at Whittier College next spring. Smith is currently playing his final season with the Bears alongside his younger brother, Jack Smith, who is going to be a senior in high school next season. “I’m very excited to play college baseball at Whittier College. They have a great program, great history, and I look forward to playing a role on the team next season,” said Kyle Smith. Smith also said that once his high school baseball journey is over, he will still come out to watch his brother Jack play games during his senior season with the Bears baseball team.
Chloe Centeno

A four-year member of the Burroughs Bears softball team and a three-year member of the Bears varsity team. Centeno has made a name for herself on a star-studded Burroughs team. Centeno, last season, set the doubles record with 23 and was a first-team all-Pacific League player the past two years.
Centeno currently has a .459 career batting average throughout her high school career and is determined to help this year’s Bears softball team win another Pacific League title in her final season playing in high school. Centeno will be taking her talents to play softball at Fort Hays University in Hays, Kansas, next spring. “At first, the recruiting process at Fort Hays was rough, but after I visited the campus, I knew it was my dream school. Having my teammates’ family and friends come out to support me meant the world to me,” said Centeno. She also said that she wants to take it day by day when asked about her final month of regular-season games with Burroughs softball.
Hannah Lewis

A four-year varsity member of the John Burroughs Bears tennis program. A team captain for three years. A two-year singles number one player and a three-time singles MVP. Hannah Lewis will be playing college tennis at Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii. Lewis was also a scholar athlete for the past four years and won multiple USTA Tournament Championships during her tennis career at Burroughs. “I’m really excited about playing college tennis at Chaminade University in Hawaii, the team seems amazing, but also I’m super pumped about the classes that I’ll be taking there,” said Hannah Lewis. Lewis also mentioned that she loved the support that her friends and loved ones showed her throughout her life.
Harrison Segal

A four-year member of the Burroughs High boys water polo team who played all four years on varsity, Harrison Siegel will be playing Division three college water polo at Pomona Pitzer in Claremont, California. Segal is a two-year captain on the Bears, and this past fall, won MVP in the Pacific League to help the Bears win a Pacific League title. “I’m excited to be joining the Pomona Pitzer community, especially the water polo community,” said Harrison Segal. Seagel admits that next year’s Burroughs boys water polo team will be losing a lot of seniors, but knows that the team will still be capable of reaching its potential.
All four Burroughs student athletes will be crossing the stage at graduation on Friday, May 23rd.
