The 10-year coaching veteran from St. Francis High School will guide the Bears through a lengthy rebuild

The John Burroughs Bears boys basketball program will have a new Head Coach for a third year in a row, and has chosen former Saint Francis High School assistant boys basketball coach Jason Weatherall to take over the program for the 2025-2026 season. Weatherall has spent 10 years working under Todd Wolfson with the Saint Francis Golden Knights, and most recently was part of the Golden Knights team that finished 16-13 overall and 0-7 in Mission League play a season ago. Outside of coaching basketball, Weatherall also works as an athletic director and physical education teacher at Saint Philip the Apostle School in Pasadena, California. Weatherall will be tasked to guide this Bears team through what has become a lengthy rebuild as they finished in last place in the Pacific League with a 5-22 overall record and 0-8 in Pacific League play.

“I’ve got a big smile on my face in the last week or so, whenever Jason and I talked about it, I’m extremely proud of Coach Weatherall taking the Head Boys Basketball Coaching Job at John Burroughs High School in Burbank,” said St Francis Head Boys Basketball Coach Todd Wolfson. Wolfson added that he’s also looking forward to seeing two members on his coaching tree in Jason Weatherall and Steve Eshleman coaching against each other in the Burbank versus Burroughs basketball rivalry, jokingly saying that one of those guys has to send him free tickets for that game.

“Jason was very knowledgeable about basketball and has been around many good programs and coaches. He is also young and energetic with great goals,” said Burroughs co-athletic director Keith Knoop. Knoop also expressed his confidence in Weatherall’s ability to bring back winning basketball to John Burroughs Basketball and also noted that he has the tools to make the boys’ program successful again.

John Burroughs High School Principal Kenny Knoop released the following statement regarding Jason Weatherall being named the next Head Coach of the Burroughs Boys Basketball Program. “We are happy and excited to announce our new Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach, Jason Weatherall! His experience and understanding of the game are unrivaled. Coach Weatherall has experience coaching at Occidental College, East Los Angeles College, Maranatha High School, and most recently with Saint Francis. Coach Weatherall has shared that he is excited to start working with the JBHS basketball athletes, and he aims to bring success to the program. John Burroughs High School could not be more excited to have Coach Weatherall be a part of the Bear Family. Coach Weatherall, welcome to John Burroughs High School!”

The coaching staff under Weatherall is in the process of getting worked out, but Scott Koulouvaris, the longtime Varsity Assistant Coach for the Burroughs Bears Boys Basketball team, will be retained. Koulouvaris has served under multiple coaching staffs, including Adam Hockberg, Allan Ellis, Austin Pope, Malique Johnson, and Darryl Carter, and now Weatherall making number six. Erik Willis will also be retained as the junior varsity head coach, and Brandon Jimmnez will also remain the frosh head coach under Weatherall as well.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to be the head boys basketball Coach at John Burroughs High School and to meet everyone within the Burroughs community,” said the new Bears coach. Weatherall added that he learned how to be genuine and act professional in this role when asked about the things he was taught when working with Todd Wolfson for 10 years at Saint Francis High School. He also added that he’s excited to work with the longtime Burroughs boys basketball assistant coach, Scott Kolovarius, and already had interactions on how to make Burroughs boys basketball better each day throughout the process.

Under Jason Weatherall, seniors Evan Lanier and last year’s Pacific League’s Honorable Mention, Teagan Bradford, should be key players heading into the 2025-2026 season. The John Burroughs Bears Boys Basketball team will spend most of the summer conducting tryouts, summer practices, and with summer and fall league games to ramp up for the 2025-2026 season.
