Burroughs finishes seventh out of eight teams in the tournament

On a sunny Saturday afternoon on Memorial Field at John Burroughs High School, the Claremont Wolfpack came out on top defeating Maranatha 21-12 in the championship game of the tournament in the second annual Bear Paw Classic 7v7 passing tournament. The purpose of this circuit is to get each team’s quarterbacks, wide receivers, and defensive backs practice reps for game play. In last year’s tournament, King Drew came out on top over St. Monica in the first installment of the series.

The teams that participated in the Bear Paw Classic are the host John Burroughs Bears,  Glendale Nitros, La Canada Spartans, Maranatha Minutemen, Eastlake Titans, Claremont Wolfpack, Alhambra Moors, and Harvard Westlake Wolverines.

“I thought our team did a lot of good, especially with our timing with our throws and our running. Super happy with the rest of the teams here that competed hard,” said Bears coach Jose Calzadilla. Calzadilla mentioned that he was happy to reunite during the tournament with his former colleagues Ran Holdren (Head Football Coach at Maranatha High School) and Bernando Castro (Offensive Line Coach at Eastlake High). He also added that Brandon Chaparro showed some moments in the tournament with his quarterback play. Chaparro is currently competing with Sean Ghaman for the starting quarterback role, and one of them will be under center for the week 1 game against Hart.

The John Burroughs Bears will spend all of July and the first three weeks of August gearing up for the 2025 season with more summer practices and, of course, training with pads and helmets.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
