Maddison McClure wins the game with a kill to help the Mustangs complete the sweep of the Bulldogs

The Burbank Bulldogs dropped the home back-to-back as they got swept for a second game in a row, this time by the Marlborough Mustangs(14-25, 10-25, 16-25). Maddison McClure recorded the game-winning kill to complete the sweep of the Bulldogs. Marlborough entered the contest following splitting the first two games of the Lakewood Tournament with a sweeping loss to Redlands, and then responded with a four-set win over Santa Fe. Burbank fell to Providence in a 3-0 sweep in the first of the home back-to-back.

Both teams began the first set in a neck-and-neck battle, but Marlborough broke the game open by going on a 7-0 scoring run. Tatawan Vongfak, McClure, and Delaney Kluender chipped in with the offense and helped the Mustangs have control of the opening set. Marlborough went on to win the first set 14-25.

The Mustangs began the second set with a lot of momentum to start the second set with a 4-1 scoring run, with Kate Zhang, Klunder, and Paloma Verega all playing a role in the offense. Burbank had no answers for closing the gap with Marlborough in set two as Veraga recorded back-to-back aces to give the Mustangs a second set victory over the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs were still looking for answers in slowing down the Mustangs’ offensive attack heading into the third set. Maddi Yosh started set three by recording a block to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead until Nico Ray tied the game with a kill in response to Yosh’s block. Yosh also played a part in set three by recording her second block of the game to keep Burbank alive at 16-24. McClure ended Burbank’s comeback hopes with a kill to end the set and match.

“Despite getting swept again, our girls showed a lot of improvement in their play and we’re proud of how they responded from a rough first game,” said Carmen Camacho Platas. Camacho Platas added that Maddi Yosh is meeting her goals of becoming a bigger presence on the court when asked about Yosh’s block to help the Bulldogs keep the game alive when the Bulldogs faced a 24-15 deficit.

Burbank falls to 0-2 and Marlborough improves to 2-1. Burbank will take on Holy Martyrs and Shadow Hills on the first day of the Burbank High girls’ volleyball varsity tournament on Friday, August 15th, at 3:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., and Marlborough will take on Downey and either Burroughs or Crossroads at the Lakewood Tournament on Saturday, August 16th, at 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Quote of the week

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.“
