NORTHRIDGE, CA – After failing to qualify for postseason play in 2024 following a 4-6 campaign, the Heritage Christian Warriors began their season of redemption in a 34-20 season-opening road win over San Marino last week. They took the field for their home opener on Friday night facing a formidable El Camino Real Royals team, who earned five takeaways and three sacks in a 34-0 shutout victory over Knight on August 22nd. Holding on to a 6-0 lead at the half, the Warriors were sparked by a second half punt return touchdown from sophomore wideout Donovan Booker. From there, Heritage Christian seized the momentum as their defense put together a stellar performance in front of the home crowd while suffocating the Royals offense with five forced fumbles and four recoveries. The Warriors got their ground game going in the second half on the offensive side of the ball to earn an impressive 26-0 shutout victory improving to 2-0 on the young season.

Heritage Christian received possession of the football to begin the contest where senior quarterback Ari Sykes executed their offense with efficiency with consecutive first down throws. A 20-yard run from senior running back Jordan Schiffner put the Warriors in goal territory, and Sykes tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass on third down to sophomore wideout Eli Simmons for their first score of the evening on their opening drive. After a bizarre sequence of multiple kickoff out-of-bounds penalties on the Warriors, El Camino Real relinquished the football back to Heritage Christian after a fumble was recovered by the defense with 3:41 left in the quarter.

The Warriors looked to capitalize on the opportunity as their next drive took the game into the second quarter, but failed to execute a fourth down conversion, turning the ball over on downs. The fumbling problems for El Camino Real continued to plague them on their subsequent drive by coughing up the football twice, eventually losing the second fumble as they crossed midfield. Regaining possession of the ball with under four minutes left, Heritage Christian approached red zone territory courtesy of a defensive pass interference penalty when junior cornerback Chayse Jackson provided a boost for the Royals as he picked the ball off from Sykes to return the ball to midfield.

Despite gaining the momentum, El Camino Real stalled offensively on their next drive with Heritage Christian having forced a three-and-out with 46 seconds left in the half. Sykes threw his second interception of the night on the last play of the first half on a Hail Mary attempt as time expired.

The Warriors continued their brilliance on the defensive end by forcing a three-and-out on the Royals first second half possession. Royals junior punter Oree Sabag punted the ball away to Heritage Christian, when the aforementioned Booker returned the punt all the way to the end zone for a game-changing touchdown.

Heritage Christian head coach Ben McEnroe emphasized the monumental shift in the game for both teams provided by Booker’s touchdown in the postgame interview, “It totally flipped the energy of the game. [It] deflated them a little bit.” Booker discussed embracing the challenges that come along with playing on Special Teams, “It’s the hardest part for me, the most tiring part for me, but I know I got my boys with me. My blockers, they won’t let me down.”

Trailing 12-0 early in the third quarter, the Royals offense re-took the field where senior quarterback and team captain Arturo Acevedo began to move the ball down the field converting consecutive third down plays through the air. El Camino Real moved the ball into goal territory at the six-yard line when a self-inflicted offensive holding penalty forced the Royals to move back ten yards. On third down, Heritage Christian senior linebacker Nicholas Boldt punched the ball out of the hands of Royals senior running back and captain Takia Campbell with a big hit to give the Warriors their third takeaway of the game. Booker praised Boldt’s leadership in the postgame interview, “It’s all behind our leader right here [while patting Boldt in the back]. Our captain. Whatever he says goes, man. Just all glory to God!”

Sykes and Schiffner spear-headed the Warriors’ following drive into the fourth quarter, as they chewed up the clock through their running game to move the chains. After making a big play on defense, two-way tight end Boldt was rewarded on the offensive end when Sykes threw him a 20-yard touchdown pass to give the Warriors a sizable 19-0 advantage with 9:24 left in the game. The offensive nightmare continued for El Camino Real on their next possession, as they once again gave the ball away with their fourth lost fumble of the contest recovered by Warriors senior defensive linemen Alijah Anaya.

With 8:38 left in the contest, Heritage Christian continued their second half offensive execution as Booker once again brought the crowd to its feet by hauling in a 28-yard one handed first down grab in stride with a defender on his side. Already in goal territory, a personal foul penalty from the Royals allowed Sykes to punch the ball in the end zone himself on quarterback sneak for a one-yard rushing touchdown to bring the game to a 26-0 score with 4:33 left. The Warriors defense secured the shutout for the remainder of the contest only allowing one first down to go along with a sack to close the game as time expired.

Coach McEnroe credited his Defensive Coordinator Mo Osling for his excellent job executing their defensive game plan postgame and how special it was, “Shutting people out is hard. That’s good football!” Racing out to a hot 2-0 start, Heritage Christian will host Centennial this upcoming Friday looking to remain unbeaten. El Camino Real will look to regroup taking on the Grace Lancers on the road in Simi Valley for a Friday night duel.

Quote of the week

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.“
