The Bears extend their sweep streak to five games and sweep the back-to-back with the Arcadia Apaches and the Hoover Tornados

The John Burroughs Bears continue to show why they are to be taken seriously as in-season frontrunners for the Pacific League title by extending their win streak to nine games with another sweeping win, this one over Hoover (25-11, 25-14, 25-6). Emma De Cunzo Steinglass contributed with six aces to help complete the sweep of the Tornados. In the first of their back-to-backs, Hoover came off a five-set defeat to the Burbank Bulldogs, while Burroughs made a statement with a sweeping win over preseason Pacific League co-favorite Arcadia Apaches.

Sienna Lay began the opening set with the game’s first ace to give Burroughs an early 1-0 lead. Peyton Braun then responded with a game-tying kill, followed by a kill from Lelila Lazaar, which put the Bears back out in front 2-1. The Bears took control of the momentum throughout the opening set with Sienna Lay racking up six aces in set one, which eventually helped Burroughs come out on top with a 25-11 win in set one.

Zoe Davis, Emma De Cunzo Steinglass, Amelia Walsh, and Chloe Pavia helped the Bears begin set two by going on a 5-0 scoring run. The run ended on a double-tapping violation committed by Burroughs, which gave Hoover an automatic point. The Tornados were unable to mount much of a comeback as Walsh also recorded the set-ending ace to give Burroughs a 25-14 win over Hoover in set two.

The Bears did not waste an opportunity to complete the sweep, starting the third set with another scoring run; this time, they started 11-0. Zoe Davis, Sienna Lay, Trinity Taylan, and Lelila Lazaar all contributed to the scoring run. Burroughs continued to put the game away until Emma De Cunzo Steinglass racked up six serving aces to help win the game for Burroughs.

Burroughs improves to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in Pacific League play, while Hoover drops to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, September 9th, as Burroughs will travel to Glendale High School to take on the Nitros, with Hoover traveling to Arcadia High School to take on the Apaches. The opening serves are scheduled to take place at 3:45 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
