Santa Monica spoils Burroughs home opener in 35-9 win

Bears offense continues to face early season struggles in loss to Vikings

The Santa Monica Vikings came out with a bang in the Burroughs Bears season home opener by coming away with a dominant 35-9 win over Burroughs. This was also the home debut for head coach Jose Calzadilla, who made his head coaching debut last week in Burroughs’ 49-0 loss to Hart week one at College of the Canyons. Santa Monica came off a 42-0 week one loss to Laguna Beach.

The Bears offense went three and out in their first drive of the game, while the Vikings got the first points of the game in the opening quarter by converting on fourth down. Eliot Bingener found Payton Seals for an 18 yard touchdown connection to give Santa Monica a 7-0 lead over Burroughs, which was the only score of the first quarter.

The Vikings added to their offensive parade in the second quarter with Isaiah Fernadnez recording a four yard rushing touchdown to give them a 14-0 lead. Bingener found Seals twice in the second quarter to extend Santa Monica’s advantage. The first was a 45 yard connection to make the score 21-0, then came a five yard touchdown pass to make it a 28-0 lead with time expiring in the second quarter.

Following the halftime break the Vikings began the second half with Elliot Bingener connecting with Myles Lee for a 45 yard touchdown pass to give Santa Monica a 35-0 lead over Burroughs. The Bears finally got on the board for their first points of the year with the defense recording a safety to make the score 35-2 which was the score to end the third quarter.

To start the fourth quarter Brandon Chapparo found King Milhouse for a red zone score and Burroughs’ first offensive touchdown of the season to cut the deficit to 35-9. Following Milhouse’s score both teams offense’s were quiet for the rest of the fourth quarter.

“As I said in the postgame huddle, all 11 guys have to do the right thing. Our guys are still nervous since this team is a young unit but we’re still lacking confidence.” said Jose Calzadilla. Calzadilla added that if the guys clean up their overall play they will be a solid team on all three phases of the game.

Burroughs falls to 0-2 and Santa Monica improves to 1-1. Both teams will return to action next week for their week three contests. Burroughs will travel to Los Altos on Thursday, September 11th with game time scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and Santa Monica will take on Notre Vista at home on Friday, September 12th also at 7:00 p.m.
