Knights offense shined in the win over the Bears

In a contest that featured a pair of first-year girls flag football programs, the Notre Dame Knights came out in the winning end of the contest with a 24-0 shutout win over the Burroughs Bears. The Knights defense shined as a part of the shutout victory. Heading into the contest, Burroughs came off a 20-6 loss to Cajon back on Wednesday, September 3rd and Notre Dame came off a 12-6 win over Chaminade back on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Both Notre Dame and Burroughs were held off the scoreboard in the first quarter, the result of a defensive showdown for both teams. Cadi Kuntz found Mikaela Edwards for a 19 yard touchdown connection in the second quarter to give the Knights a 6-0 lead. Kuntz then found Claire Cowles for a red zone touchdown with time expiring to give Notre Dame a 12-0 lead heading into halftime.

Cadi Kutz used trickery to open the scoring in the second half when she connected with Taylor Ford and Brooklyn Ravelo for a double pass touchdown to give the Knights a 18-0 lead following Notre Dame’s defense forcing a three and out to start the third quarter. Kayla Duran thought she ended the shoutout on the Knights by running for a 64 yard touchdown run but it was called back due to a flag guarding penalty. Following the penalty, the Knights forced another punt to get the ball back for the offense. Notre Dame led by 18 heading into the final quarter.

Claire Cowles then sealed the game with a quarterback keeper for a touchdown to make the score 24-0. Alyssa Pracha tried to rally the Bears to avoid the shutout with her quarterback runs but the Knights defense forced turnovers on downs on both offensive drives for Burroughs.

Notre Dame improves to 6-2 and Burroughs falls to 3-7. Both teams will return to action on Monday, September 8th as Burroughs will host La Canada with Notre Dame hosting Windward. Those games are scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
