Burroughs splits back to back with Sacred Heart of Jesus & Santa Monica

Bears sweep the double header with the Comets & drop 20-6 to the Vikings

The John Burroughs Bears split their back-to-back sets this week with Sacred Heart of Jesus and Santa Monica. Burroughs swept a doubleheader with the Comets before dropping 20-6 to the Vikings in the second of the back-to-back. Burroughs defeated Sacred Heart of Jesus 26-0 in game one of the doubleheader and then again 45-0 in game two of the double header.

Entering the first game, Burroughs came off a 44-20 win over Los Altos, while Sacred Heart of Jesus lost to Alhambra 39-6. To start the first game of the doubleheader, Karisma Mendez found Geneva Keifer for a 17-yard touchdown connection to give Burroughs an early 6-0 lead for the only score of the opening quarter. The Bears led by six heading into the second quarter.

Mendez took it to the house for a 26-yard quarterback touchdown run to give Burroughs a 12-0 lead in the second quarter, and the Bears led by 12 entering the halftime break. Keifer began the second half with a bang for Burroughs when she intercepted Seyenna Semerena and turned it into a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown to give the Bears a 20-0 lead. Kayla Duran put the icing on the cake in the fourth quarter by recording a 29-yard touchdown run to give the Bears a 26-0 lead.

In the second game of the doubleheader between Burroughs and Sacred Heart of Jesus, Lillian Graham found Naveh Diaz with a goal line touchdown pass which was followed by Hailey Franco converting the one point try to give the Bears a 7-0 lead. Burroughs then followed with two more scores in the second quarter with Graham finding Krystal Vilata in the end zone for a touchdown to give the Bears a 13-point lead. This was then followed by an interception return for a touchdown by Jasmine Verella to put Burroughs up by 20 heading into intermission.

On the first play of the third quarter, Kayla Duran took it to the house for a 66-yard touchdown and also converted the one-point try to put Burroughs up by 27. Graham then found Liczy Mercado in the end zone to convert on fourth down to increase the Bears’ lead to 33. Alyssa Pracha then added to the big lead for Burroughs with another score to make it 39-0 heading into the final quarter of play. Pracha scored on the ground again to seal the game at 45-0.

Burroughs improves to 7-8 and Sacred Heart of Jesus drops to 1-8. Sacred Heart of Jesus will take on Schur on Thursday, September 18th at 6:30 p.m.

The Bears faced Santa Monica on the second day of their back-to-back following the contests with Sacred Heart of Jesus. Santa Monica entered the contest coming off a 52-0 loss to Beverly Hills back on Thursday, September 11th.

The Vikings got on the board first with Belle Walker finding Chloe Sanders in the end zone for the game’s first touchdown to give Santa Monica an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter which was the only score to begin the contest. The Bears closed the gap in the second quarter with Karisma Mendez and Geneva Keifer connecting for an 11-yard touchdown to put Burroughs within one. Chloe Sanders intercepted Karisma Mendez in the end zone to give the Vikings a key defensive stop on the extra point attempt. Walker responded for Santa Monica when she found Chloe Sanders again for a 13-yard touchdown. The one-point try was successful with Walker finding Freya Rainsford to give the Vikings a 14-6 lead. Sade Session ended the first half with a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown to give Santa Monica a 20-6 lead over Burroughs heading into the halftime break.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second half in a defensive battle for the rest of the game. Burroughs falls to 7-9 with Santa Monica improving to 5-5-1 overall. Burroughs will return to action on Monday, September 22nd against Immaculate Heart at 6:00 p.m. and Santa Monica will take on Leuzinger for a second of the back to back at 4:00 p.m.
