Ameila Walsh’s seven aces in set one propelled the Bears to a three set victory over the the Mustangs










Following a rough four set loss to a top heavy Crescenta Valley Falcon squad back on Thursday, the John Burroughs Bears bounced back with a sweeping victory over the Muir Mustangs (25-7, 25-4, 25-4). Muir came into the contest following a sweeping loss to Hoover, also last Thursday.




To start the opening set Lelila Lazzar scored the game’s first kill, followed by two aces from Emma De Cunzo Steinglass to give the Bears 3-0 lead. Burroughs hit cruise control in the first set with Ameila Walsh recording five straight aces to give them a 17-4 lead over Muir. Walsh then added two more serving aces to give the Bears a comfortable 20-4 lead. Lila Cabral and Trinity Taylan both exchanged kills to end the opening frame, 25-7.




Alexandra Hammeke, Sienna Lay, Ameila Walsh, and Zoe Davis contributed to an 8-0 scoring run; Lay had four aces to start set two. Izabella Hanson recorded a kill, and then added four straight aces to give the Bears an 18-4 advantage. The Mustangs were only held to four points in the second set with the Bears easily taking a 2-0 match lead heading into the third set.




Burroughs went on a 9-2 scoring run to start the third set with Alex Hammakee and Andra Slobig doing their job to start the game offensively. Kylee Beveridge completed the sweep with a game ending kill for the Bears.






“Everyone got a chance to play but we still had to serve and pass well, along with taking care of business,” said Edwin Real. Real also added that the team still needs to work on defending against the tips along with effective serving.











Burroughs improves to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in Pacific League play with Muir falling to 0-6 overall and 0-7 in Pacific League play. Muir will take on crosstown rival Pasadena in the second of a back to back at 4:00 p.m. with Burroughs playing against their cross town rival Burbank on Thursday, September 18th at 3:45 p.m. at Burbank High School.
