Rialto survives a six-point win over Burroughs

Knights’ defense forcing a turnover on downs in the late stages of the fourth quarter propelled them to a narrow win over the Bears

The Rialto Knights escaped with a 6-0 win over the Burroughs Bears behind a defensive display, including a huge stop in the fourth quarter. Geneva Keifer was stopped just short of the first down marker on a crucial fourth down play late in the game. Rialto entered this game following a 40-0 win over Fontana in the first of their back-to-back, and Burroughs came away with a 20-6 win over Immaculate Heart back on Monday.

To start the opening quarter, Rialto’s defense forced a three-and-out on the first offensive drive of the game for Burroughs. Danielle Contreras was intercepted by Kelsey Vivas, providing hope that it would jumpstart the Bears’ offense. Vivas then caught a 32-yard pass from Karisma Mendez, but the Knights’ defense held firm and stopped the Bears. Both teams were held scoreless at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Contreras found Jazzleen Serratos for a 15-yard connection for the game’s only touchdown to give the Knights a 6-0 lead. Mendez was sacked two times to end the first half.

Burroughs’ defense began the second half by forcing a turnover on downs. They were unable to capitalize, however, as Keifer dropped a critical pass, an example of the offensive struggles for the Bears. Rialto held on to a 6-0 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The Bears forced another three-and-out on the Knights’ offense, as the defense kept them in the game. Rialto’s defense came up big again with another defensive stop. The Bears’ hopes of winning the game came to a close when Keifer was stopped short, unable to convert on fourth down to end the game.

 “We had wide-open touchdowns that we dropped and wide-open plays that we did not take advantage of. We gave Rialto momentum that we should not have given them,” said Keith Knoop. Knoop also added that he’s a little frustrated knowing that Burroughs is better than what people think they are on paper.

Burroughs drops to 8-10 and Rialto improves to 8-9. Burroughs will host Windward in the second of their home back-to-back at 4:00 p.m., and Rialto will close out the regular season on Tuesday, September 30th, against Rim of the World at 3:45 p.m.
