The football season hits the official halfway mark, and although the slate is lighter than normal with several teams on bye weeks, there are still a few games that are sure to entertain this week. The action gets going in the Valley Mission tonight, with a couple of intriguing matchups to follow tomorrow. Here are the games you will not want to miss in the SFV this week:

San Fernando Tigers (4-1) at Van Nuys Wolves (4-1) – 9/25, Van Nuys HS, 7 pm kickoff

The Tigers bounced back in a big way at home versus Reseda last week to push their record to 4-1. This week, they hit the road to face a Van Nuys team that finds itself in the place the Tigers were last week: looking to recover from their first loss of the season. The Wolves would be a significantly tougher test than the Regents were for San Fernando, so they had better be ready defensively. Despite the final score, the Wolves were able to move the ball well at times against the best team in the league last week, and have still averaged 34 points per game in their four wins this season. The Tigers are coming in with a talented offensive group themselves, putting up 38 points per game in their four wins on the season so far. This game could very well come down to who has the ball last.

Canoga Park Hunters (3-2) at Sylmar Spartans (3-1) – 9/25, Sylmar HS, 7 pm kickoff

The Hunters have already exceeded most expectations with the growth the program has shown un Lucius Mills this season. The next question for the young Hunters to answer is whether they can take the show on the road and win against a tough opponent in the league. They played well last week at Panorama but came up just short. This week, they will travel to Sylmar to take on a red-hot Spartans squad that took down Chatsworth on the road last week. I would expect this game will be decided by whether the Hunters can contain the Spartans’ run game, after Reyleo Lopez and Tim Tanner Jr. combined for 295 yards on the ground in their victory last week.

North Hollywood Huskies (1-3) at Verdugo Hills Dons (1-3) – 9/26, Verdugo Hills HS, 7 pm kickoff

If you thought the Huskies were done after a 0-3 start, they put a 54-point pasting on Monroe to show that they are alive and ready to turn the season on its ear. They will take to the road this week and head to Verdugo Hills in a battle between two teams looking to keep their momentum going after picking up their first wins of the season last week. The Dons will need a big game out of Aiden Mejia this week to keep up with a NoHo offense that appears to be firing on all cylinders after putting up over 500 yards last week. It will be a tall task for the Dons, but if they can manage a win, the East Valley could be theirs for the taking when all is said and done.

#19 Crenshaw Cougars (3-1) at #14 Cleveland Cavaliers (1-3) –  9/26, Cleveland HS, 7 pm kickoff

It has been a bit of a rollercoaster start for Cleveland to begin the season, having to switch gears after losing their starting quarterback early in the first game. The Cavs have hung tough in all their losses and have continued to show flashes that a second-half bounce back could be on the horizon. No better way to show it than to take down a top-20 opponent in Crenshaw at home this week. That will be easier said than done with the Cougars, who come in boasting wins in three of their first four contests, including a 57-0 victory over DMAC two weeks ago.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
