Bears sweep Bulldogs to secure a co-Pacific League Championship with Crescenta Valley, and then win in four sets over the Pioneers

The John Burroughs Bears won both parts of their home back-to-back with the Burbank Bulldogs and the Providence Pioneers this week to clinch a share of the Pacific League Title with the Crescenta Valley Falcons and also to secure a spot in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs. The Bears swept their crosstown rival Burbank on Tuesday night and won in four sets over Providence (25-27, 25-23, 25-12, 25-20) on Wednesday night.

Burroughs entered their game against Burbank after going 2-2 at the Garden Grove Tournament last Saturday. Burbank came off a sweeping loss to CV on Dig Pink Night last Thursday.

Before the opening serve of the crosstown matchup, seven Burroughs Bears Volleyball seniors were honored and celebrated with their families and loved ones. The seven graduating seniors are Khloe Pavia, Talia Grandinetti, Izzy Hanson, Savana Lay, Sienna Lay, Lelila Lazzar, and Andrea Slobig. The Lay Twins also got the honor to sing the Star Spangled Banner following the senior night festivities, pregame warmups, and player intros.

Both began the opening set with apparent jitters. The Bulldogs players were out of rotation to start the game, and then Savana Lay got the Bears out in front 2-0. Both Sienna Lay and Grace O’Connor then traded net serves, with Lay’s net serve putting the Bulldogs on the board. The Bears broke the game open by going on an 8-2 scoring run, with Andrea Slobig and Zoe Davis helping contribute to the eventual 10-2 lead. Burroughs continued to rout Burbank in set one by coming away with a 25-12 win in the opening set.

O’Connor and Alex Hammeke traded points to begin the second set, which tied the score at one. Madi Yosh made it a four-point game with a clutch ace for the Bulldogs. Trinity Talyan’s two kills in the back half of the second set helped the Bears get closer to another set win over the Bulldogs. Emerson Chong and Savana Lay also traded kills to end the second set, with Chong’s kill making it a 24-18 game and Lay’s kill ending it for Burroughs with a 25-18 victory.

The Bears went on a 5-1 scoring run to start the third set as Khloe Pavia had three kills right off the bat, followed by Andrea Slobig’s ace. Slobig’s following serve hit the net, which ended the scoring run for Burroughs. Burbank faced a 7-3 deficit at one point, but a big kill by Anya Oganian made it a three-point game. Burbank continued to challenge Burroughs in set three by overcoming another big deficit in hopes of getting to a fourth set.

After being down 19-12, Chloe Gallagher and Chong capitalized on the Bears’ scoring turnovers to give the Bulldogs life. Trinity Talyan served the ball out of bounds to make it a three-point game, along with Lelila Lazzar’s failed kill attempt, which put the Bulldogs back within two. The Bears escaped the third set with Lazaar’s block set up the game-ending point by Amelia Walsh to complete the sweep of the Bulldogs.

The Burbank Bulldogs’ season has come to a close, and they will miss the playoffs once again. They finished the regular season in fifth place in the Pacific League at 6-8, with a 12-20 record overall.

Following Burroughs’ sweep of the Burbank Bulldogs, the Bears finished the regular season with a four-set victory over the Providence Pioneers in a contest that featured two 20-win squads. The Pioneers entered the contest with the Bears coming off a four-set defeat to Oakwood back on Monday night.

The Pioneers started off the opening set by going on a 4-0 scoring run. Giselle Pacheco recorded two kills at the start, which was followed by back-to-back aces by former Bears’ player Nasiyah Chapman. Burroughs got back in the game with back-to-back points by Zoe Davis. A Pioneer’s turnover cut the deficit to one at 4-3. Both teams entertained the crowd with an epic first set, with Providence escaping set one in the tie-break with a 27-25 win.

Providence began the second set quickly with a 3-0 lead with points by Nasiyah Chapman and Kailey Ho. Just like the first set, both the Pioneers and Bears were competitive throughout, battling until the end, with the Bears taking set two 25-23 on a Trinity Taylan kill.

Khloe Pavia committed a net violation to start the third set, which gave the Pioneers the opening point. Gianna Lafontaine put Providence up 2-0 following Pavia’s error. Zoe Davis and Pavia recorded back-to-back kills to tie the score at two. While it was a competitive start to the third set, the Bears gained momentum and were able to hold Providence to 12 points. Pavia ended set three with a kill, 25-12.

Nasyiah Chapman recorded two aces to begin set four, with Natalia Avanesian playing a part in the Pioneers’ fast start as they attempted to force a deciding fifth set. Khloe Pavia then had three kills to put Burroughs in front by one. It was a highly competitive start to set four, culminating in the Pioneers’ final lead at 11-10. Burroughs tied the set on a ball out of play and took over from there, eventually building a 20-13 lead. Zoe Davis ended the Pioneers’ comeback hopes with a kill to give the Bears a five-point win in set four for the Bears.

The Burroughs Bears ended the regular season with a 24-8 overall record and a Pacific League record of 13-1, which resulted in a tie for first place with CV. The Providence Pioneers finish with a 20-12 overall record and an 11-2 record in Independence League play behind League champions Oakwood. Both teams will know their CIF Southern Section playoff opponent in the opening round on Saturday, October 18th at 9:00 a.m.
