Bulldogs defense recorded two pick sixes and had an offensive explosion in the win over the Tornados

The Burbank Bulldogs came away with a shutout 69-0 victory over the Hoover Tornados behind two interception returns for touchdowns by Noah May Vaughn and Johnny Sale plus an offensive explosion that carried them the entire game. Hoover previously lost 21-10 to Burroughs while Burbank came off a 35-14 win over Pasadena in their week seven contests last Friday.

Prior to kickoff members of the Burbank High School Marching Band/Color Guard and Pom squads were honored in a senior night pregame ceremony. Danica Del Rio (Color Guard), Eddie Van Rijs (Marching Band), Eesh’s Pundir (Marching Band), Dusk Mejia (Marching Band), Merrick Higgins (Marching Band), Cory Fonseca (Marching Band), John Blackstone (Marching Band), and Waylan Chao (Marching Band) headlined the nine graduating marching band and color guard seniors with Meliana Mier, Gleni Avetisyan, Asuka Watanabe and Samatha De Paz headlining the four graduating seniors on pom.

On the football field, May Vaughn got the scoring started for the Bulldogs in the opening quarter with a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown off of Elliot Nussabum with Ryan Mendoza converting the extra point to put Burbank on top 7-0. Following the Burbank defense forcing a turnover on downs on Hoover, DeShawn LaPorte connected with Chase Miles on a 26-yard touchdown pass to put Burbank up 14-0, which was the score to end the first quarter.

Johnny Sale got the scoring going for the Bulldogs to start the second quarter with a 40-yard interception return for touchdown off of Nussabaum to put Burbank up by 21. The Bulldogs added a parade of points throughout the second quarter that began with LaPorte finding Elijah Pendleton for a 46 yard touchdown pass to make it a 28 point game.

May Vaughn continued to be a menace defensively when he recovered a fumble to get the football back for the Bulldogs to set up another score. LaPorte found Pendleton again, this time for a 12-yard connection to put the Bulldogs up 35-0. Following the Bulldog defense forcing a three and out on the Tornado offense, Pendleton returned the punt for 50 yards to set up another score for Burbank. LaPorte hit Exodus Freeman for a 10-yard strike to the end zone to put the Bulldogs up 42-0. Laporte connected with Pendleton for a third on a 28-yard touchdown pass to put Burbank up 49-0 at the halftime break.

During halftime four graduating seniors from the Burbank High School cheer squad and 14 seniors on the Burbank Bulldogs Varsity Football program were honored and celebrated with their families and loved ones. Blue the Bulldog (mascot) along with Isabel Campos, Luciana Amadori, and Leyla Carrasco headlined the four cheer seniors with Johny Sale, Elijah Pendleton, Noah May Vaughn, Thomas Adzhemyan, Giordan Lewis, Paolo Seltenrich, Exodus Freeman, Alan Garcia, Chase Miles, Adrian Albarran William McGee, Ryan Mendoza, Matthew Winn, David Saroyan, and Anthony Torres headlined the football seniors on the Bulldogs.

Back in action, Burbank wasted no time scoring to start the second half as Laporte found Chase Miles for a 20-yard touchdown pass to put the Bulldogs up 56-0. Hoover’s struggles to put up points showed in the start of the third quarter with Burbank forcing another turnover on downs to set up another score. Tyler Hudson took it to the house for a 45-yard touchdown run and Hoover continued to fight as Logan Dancel blocked Ryan Mendoza’s extra point attempt leaving the Bulldogs lead at 62-0 through three quarters.

It was an uneventful final quarter for the most part but DeShawn Laporte connected with Troy Wells on a shovel pass for a red zone touchdown to put Burbank up 69-0 to seal the game. The Bulldog defense forced a turnover on downs on the Tornados to call it a night.

Burbank improves to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in Pacific League play to keep pace with Muir for first place with Hoover dropping to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return next Friday night for their week nine contests. Burbank will take on the Glendale Nitros at Moyse Stadium at 7:00 p.m. with Hoover hosting Muir at 5:30 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
