Sienna Lay’s kill to end the third set propelled the Bears past the Wolfpack to move on to the second round of the playoffs

The John Burroughs Bears come away with a convincing, sweeping win over the Claremont Wolfpack behind Sienna Lay’s game-winning kill. Both the Bears and Wolfpack entered the playoffs after winning their respective league titles. Claremont finished the regular season with an 18-9 overall record and went 8-2 in Palomares League play, with Burroughs finishing the regular season with a 24-8 overall record and a 13-1 record in Pacific League play. 

Claremont came off a four-set win over Ayla back on Monday, October 13th, with Burroughs ended the regular season with a four-set win over Providence back on Wednesday, October 15th. The Wolfpack began the opening set by scoring three straight points. First, Sienna Lay served the ball out of bounds, followed by points by Chloe Leeper and Abby Leeper to put the Wolfpack up 3-0. Zoe Davis and Amelia Walsh got the Bears on the board with their first point with a block to make it a 3-1 game. 

The Bears overcame an 8-5 deficit as Davis and Walsh teamed up for another block to put them up 9-8. Burroughs gained momentum after a slow start, and Lelila Lazaar ended the first set with a kill to give the Bears a 25-18 win in set one. 

Both the Bears and Wolfpack began set two by trading off points. Chloe Leeper and Amelia Walsh both got kills for their respective teams. Following Peyton Natividad’s net serve, Khloe Pavia recorded back-to-back kills to give the Bears a 5-2 advantage. Oliva Roberts and Amelia Walsh then traded kills with Burroughs still on top 6-3. Abby Leeper recorded a block to put the Wolfpack within one. Pavia finished with five kills in the second set, which put the Bears in position to take the second set. Sienna Lay scored a kill to end it. 

Entering the third, Burroughs was looking to complete the sweep while Claremont was looking to keep their season alive by forcing a fourth set. The Wolfpack gave the Bears a challenge towards the end of the third set as Chloe Leeper and Abby Leeper recorded back-to-back kills to keep pace with the Bears, only trailing by two points. Neither side had the clear advantage, but both Savannah and Sienna Lay also recorded back-to-back kills to set up a set point for the Bears. Tatum Longyear kept the game alive with a clutch kill to make it a 24-22 game. Sienna Lay came through with a kill to give Burroughs a 25-22 win to complete the sweep of the Wolfpack to move on to the second round of the playoffs. 

The Bears went on the road to take on the Corona Del Mar Sea Kings at Newport Beach in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division Three Playoffs. Despite battling deep into the tie-break in the second set, Burroughs fell two sets to none with the set final of 29-27. The Bears rallied and took sets three and four by scores of 25-23 and 25-22, respectively. Ultimately, Corona Del Mar would hold off Burroughs in the final set 15-11. The Bears’ season has now come to an end.
