Crescenta Valley keeps their playoff hopes alive with a big 34-28 win over Burroughs

Ethan Martinez’s 48-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter propelled the Falcons to a big win over the Bears

In a contest that featured two teams that were fighting for their playoff lives, the Crescenta Valley Falcons came away with a narrow 34-28 win over the John Burroughs Bears behind Ethan Martinez’s 48-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. With this win the Falcons increased their chances of making the CIF Southern Section Play as either a fourth place finisher in the Pacific League or as an at-large entry. Despite the loss, Burroughs still could secure an at-large entry with a win over their cross town rival Burbank and a CV loss to Arcadia.

Both teams suffered week eight losses as Burroughs got shutout by Muir 63-0 while CV came off a heartbreaking 27-21 loss to Pasadena in a game that took place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

On the Bears football team 17 seniors got the spotlight in King Milhouse, Jamar Saint-Fluer, Tripton Sloothour, Brendan Smith, Tyler Lorenc, Jayde Valle (Team Captain), Hasan Khalifa, Angel Del Real, Donovan Ybarra, Cederick Velasquez, Anthony Castro, Rizon Williamson (Team Captain), Juan Carlos Barrera, Joshua Orosco Diaz, Aaron Figueroa, and Dominic Saraceno.

On the cheer team, Paige Conahan, Georgia Brasfield, Alana Sierra, Olivia Black, Nia Askerneese, and Cayenne Magdlen headlined the six cheerleading seniors, along with eight marching band seniors that were headlined by Kaitlyne Arriola, Tim Brown, Jacquelyn Camarella, Valentina Devora, Val Estrada, Kaisa Penney, Joseph Perez, and Cooper Robertson.

On the gridiron, the Falcons’ defense forced a three-and-out on the Bears offense to set up the game’s first score. Ethan Martinez ran the ball into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown scamper to give CV an early 7-0 lead. Xavier Thompson later took it to the endzone for a 39-yard touchdown run to put the Falcons up 14-0, which was the score to end the first quarter.

Crescenta Valley committed a roughing the passer penalty on Burroughs to begin the second quarter, which set up the first score for Burroughs. Brandon Chapparo took it to the house for a 14-yard touchdown run to make it a 14-7 game. The Falcons punched back with Thompson recording his second rushing touchdown of the game – this time going for 28 yards to get the CV lead back to 14. The Falcon defense then forced a turnover on downs as Tyler Lorence dropped a critical pass from Brandon Chapparo in the end zone for what could have been a 24-yard touchdown pass. The Bears’ defense kept the game close as Brendan Smith intercepted a pass from Brody Cole deep in their own territory. Crescenta Valley stepped up on defense, and Thompson intercepted Chapparo to end the first half. The Falcons lead 21-7 heading into the second half.

Following halftime, the Falcons wasted no time getting on the board to begin the third quarter as Ethan Martinez capped off the opening drive with a four-yard touchdown run to make it a 27-7 game with his second rushing touchdown of the game. The Bears then responded with a touchdown score of their own. Brandon Chapparo found Tony Sanchez for a 71-yard strike to make it a 27-14 game in hopes of an epic comeback.

The Falcons’ defense forced another turnover on downs on the Bears’ offense to start the fourth quarter, which set up another score for CV to put the game away. Ethan Martinez provided insurance for the Falcons with his third rushing touchdown of the game with a 48-yard run, to make it a 34-14 game. Troy Ascota scored two big touchdowns, adding to the hopes of the Bears forcing overtime to end the fourth quarter. First, Ascota scored a goal-line touchdown to make it a 34-21 game. He then caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Sean Gahman to make it a six-point game. The Bears’ special teams kicked the ball out of bounds on the onside kick attempt, which ended hopes of a game-winning drive. The Falcons went into victory formation and took the six-point win.

“I was really proud of the way we started the game; our defense gave the Burroughs offense a hard time, but for the most part, this team played a physical brand of football, which we never do against them,” said Hudson Gossard.  Gossard added that they’ve got a lot of skill position players who can make the big plays for CV to succeed.

“We were not effective in the first half,” said Jose Calzadilla. “CV did a great job with their game plan, as we did not adjust to it quickly at first, but it ultimately cost us the game since we did not get things done early on in the game.” Calzadilla also added that the Bears adjusted well in the second half but couldn’t pull off a come from behind win with how things were going early on in the game.

Burroughs drops to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in Pacific League play which puts them in a tie for fourth place with Crescenta Valley. The Falcons improved to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in Pacific League play which puts them tied for fourth place in the standings.

Both teams will return to action for their week 10 games as Burroughs will take on crosstown rival Burbank in the 77th annual homecoming football game at Memorial Field. The Bears will serve as the visiting team against the Bulldogs. Crescenta Valley will have a shot to clinch a CIF Southern Section Playoff Berth when they take on Arcadia. Either a Falcons win or a Burroughs loss to Burbank will round out the Pacific League’s top four. Both of those games will take place on Thursday, October 30th at 7:00 p.m.
