Burbank Lady Bulldogs go 2-1 in the first annual BHS girls basketball tournament showcase with wins over Mayfield & Providence with their lone loss to Grant

Lady Bulldogs fall to Grant 36-39, defeat Mayfield 96-13 & come away with a 74-12 win over Providence

The Burbank Lady Bulldogs went 2-1 in the first annual Burbank High School girls basketball tournament showcase as they fell to Grant 36-39 on day one before defeating Mayfield 96-13 on day two and then coming out on top with a 74-12 win over Providence to close out the showcase.

The Lady Bulldogs entered the three-day tournament showcase following a 68-22 home opening win over Simi Valley, while Grant came off a 54-29 win. Both teams began the first quarter trading two-point baskets with Anthonella Bikota and Yvette Soukiazian recording layups for their respective teams. Alani Kyles then put Grant out in front 5-2 with a three-point basket and Ani Khachatryan responded with a two-point bucket to get the Lady Bulldogs within one. Enissa Walker pushed the Lady Lancers’ lead back to three with a basket and Grant ended a low scoring first quarter with a 7-4 lead over Burbank.

Andrea Aparico recorded back-to-back layups to put Burbank ahead by one to start the second quarter, but Natalie Karapetryan recorded a three-point basket to give Grant a 10-8 lead. Both teams continued their competitive showdown throughout the quarter and the Lady Lancers entered the halftime break with a 17-14 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.

Khachatryan began the second half with a game tying three for Burbank and Aparico hit a jump shot to give Burbank a two-point lead. Kyles tied the score at 19 by nailing both of her foul shots. Alina Arakelyan nailed a buzzer-beating two-point bank shot to end the quarter and Grant held a 27-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Arakelyan put Grant up by three to start the fourth quarter and Aparico got Burbank back within one with a clutch layup. Both teams never wavered down the stretch with no clear advantage to either side. Khachatryan gave Burbank a brief lead with a clutch three. Both teams continued to trade baskets until Maria Fernandez recorded a go ahead basket to put the Lady Lancers up 37-36.

Following Grant’s five second violation Khachatryan and Rhiley Ocampo both missed big three shots before Kyles nailed down both of her foul shots to give Grant a 39-36 lead. Burbank had one more chance to tie the game but Khachatryan’s three-point attempt to force overtime missed, resulting in a heartbreaking loss for the Lady Bulldogs.

Following Burbank’s loss to the two-time CIF City Section Semifinalists, they blew out Mayfield 96-13. The Cubs suffered a 16-29 loss to Providence on the first day of the tournament.

The Bulldogs began the first quarter by committing a traveling violation. Following the first turnover of the game, Yvette Soukiazian and Annabelle Setaghian got the Bulldogs out in front 4-0 over the Cubs. Lauren Novak recorded the only basket for Mayfield in the first quarter with a two-point basket. Burbank continued to explode offensively throughout the opening quarter, scoring 25 points, and held Mayfield to only two points. The Bulldogs ended the first quarter with a convincing 23 point lead along with committing two turnovers.

Alyssa Sirois ended Burbank’s scoring run by nailing both of her free throws to start the second quarter. Jolene Vartanian then converted one of two shots at the foul line to put Burbank up 26-4. The Bulldog’s offense continued to go on a rampage throughout the second quarter which resulted in them putting up 50 points on the Cubs at the halftime break.

Soukiazian, Ocampo, Khachatryan and Aparico started the second half with eight straight points before Hannah Noser scored a basket to end Burbank’s 16-0 scoring run. The Bulldogs continued to put the game away with a parade of points which resulted in them leading 84-9 over the Cubs entering the final quarter of play.

The offensive parade for Burbank continued in the fourth quarter with more contributions from Soukiazian, Aparico, and Khachatryan, and Natalie Megerdichian chipped in as well. Xitali Lizarde ended the Bulldogs scoring run with a two point basket. Khachatryan scored 36 points and Aparico scored 20 points in the 83-point win over Mayfield. Burbank is now 2-0 in games after losses.

Following Burbank’s 96-13 win over Mayfield, the Lady Bulldogs came away with a 74-14 win over the Lady Pioneers behind Aparico’s 22-point performance. Providence entered the contest with Burbank coming off a 59-22 loss to Notre Dame Academy on day two. Taline Kadi got Providence on the board first by making one of two shots at the foul line. Khachatryan and Aparico teamed to put Burbank up 5-1 with back-to-back points. Samantha Oldenquist then got Providence back within two with a layup, but Aparico recorded back-to-back layups of her own to give Burbank an 11-3 lead. Roxie Kreamer responded with a three-point basket to make it an 11-6 game. The Lady Bulldogs then stepped on the gas with consecutive points by Aparico, Khachatryan, and Soukiazian as they led 20-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Jolene Vartanian began the second quarter converting a second chance opportunity after recording a put back following Natalie Megedrichian’s missed three. Burbank held Providence to no points throughout quarter two and led 39-6 at the halftime break.

Kadi and Aparico traded three-point baskets to begin the second half. Kadi then ended Burbank’s 6-0 run by making one of two shots at the free throw line. Manina Tuptupu and Megerdichian both helped Burbank get to 58 points with their two-point shots, which resulted in a 48-point lead for the Bulldogs entering the final quarter of play.

Burbank began the final quarter by going on a 12-0 scoring run to seal the game. Samantha Oldenquist stopped the scoring run for the Lady Bulldogs by recording a two point layup following a steal to make it a 72-12 game. Charlotte Hartwell recorded a two point layup to give Burbank a dominant 62-point win over Providence.

Burbank improves to 8-2 following the tournament and Providence falls to 3-4. The Lady Bulldogs begin Pacific League play on Friday, December 12th, hosting the Arcadia Apaches at the dog house with tip off slated for 5:15 p.m. Providence returns to action on Tuesday, December 9th with a road contest with Monrovia with tip off slated for 5:30 p.m which will be the first of a road back-to-back with the Lady Wildcats followed by visiting the Flintridge Sacred Heart Tologs in the second.
