Seven Elkin scores a big insurance goal in the second half to seal the two-goal win for the Bears over the Highlanders

The John Burroughs Bears gave Mark Martinez his first career head coaching win with a 3-1 victory over the Granada Hills Highlanders on Monday. Seven Elkin scored a big second half goal to end the comeback chances for Granada Hills. Burroughs came off a 5-0 season opening loss to Birmingham last Wednesday and Granada Hills came off a 1-0 win over Sierra Canyon over the weekend.

Dylan Valencia had a chance to give the Highlanders an early lead but could not convert his opportunity at goal in the 10th minute of play. He also had two more chances in the 28th and 34th minutes. David Lazaryan also had a missed goal chance for Granada Hills in the 11th minute of play. Jordan Rios scored the game’s first goal in the 33rd minute and then Matteo Lopez increased the lead to two with a goal in the 36th minute of play. Burroughs entered the halftime break with a 2-0 lead over Granada Hills.

Following intermission, Seven Elkin had opportunities at goal in the 4th and 13th minutes of half two. Fabiano Mendoza thought he got the Highlanders on the board but the officials did not count the goal due to an offsides call. Following Steven Solares’s missed headed attempt in the 23rd minute of play, Maksym Panevskyi got the Highlanders on the board with a goal in the 32nd minute to make it a one goal game, stirring hopes of an epic comeback. Seven Elkin ended Granada Hills’ comeback hopes with a big insurance goal in the 35th minute of play. Jonathan Hernandez had a chance to get the Highlanders back within one but ended up missing a goal chance in the 38th minute of play.

“I was very happy with the win, we studied Granada Hills very well with our preparation and had a great understanding of their game plan but we executed our plan of attack in the victory.” said Mark Martinez. Martinez also added that it was an incredible feeling to get his first victory as the Burroughs head boys soccer coach with the fact that he got to do it at home.

“It was a tough result to lose the way we did, after being down 2-0 at the half we made adjustments to our game plan to attempt to turn the game upside down.” said Michael Armas. Armas also added that he was happy with how his two goal keepers in Adrian Cervantes and Andrew Arechiga played in the loss to Burroughs.

Burroughs improves to 1-1-0 and Granada Hills drops to 2-2-0. Burroughs will begin Pacific League play with Pasadena on Friday, December 12th at 3:45 p.m. and Granada Hills will host Moorpark on Wednesday, December 10th at 3:45 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
