Jocelyn Morinaga scores three goals in one game in the shutout win over the Vikings

The Burbank Bulldogs continued their amazing start to the season with a 6-0 shutout victory over the Blair Vikings behind the three goal performance by Jocelyn Morinaga. The Bulldogs are right now one of the hottest teams early on in the season. Heading into the match, Burbank came off a 3-1 victory over Arcadia to start Pacific League play and Blair escaped with a 1-0 win over Hoover in the first game of their back-to-back.

Following Jocelyn Morinaga’s missed goal chance in the first minute of play in the first half, Emily Taghon stepped up and got the Bulldogs on the board first with a second minute goal for a 1-0 lead. Allison Rubio missed an opportunity to get the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the seventh minute of play. Sofia Leon had two chances at goal to score in the ninth and 19th minutes of play. Morinaga made up for her miss in the opening minute with a 21st minute goal to put Burbank up 2-0.

Taghon then scored her second goal of the game with an assist from Leon to increase the Bulldog lead to three. Burbank’s defense held Blair’s offense in check for the most part in the opening half with their only real chance coming when Maya Matuszeki had an opportunity to cut the lead to two in the 38th minute of play. The Bulldogs led 3-0 over the Vikings at the halftime break.

After the halftime break, Taghon and Allison Rubio both had chances at goal to start the second half in the fifth and 10th minutes respectively. Rubio’s missed goal chance was a head shot attempt on a pass from Taghon. Morinaga later scored two more goals to complete the hat trick in the 21st and 38th minutes of play, increasing the Bulldog lead to five. Rachel Dias put the icing on the cake with a final minute goal with another assist from Taghon to make it a 6-0 game over Blair.

Burbank improves to 5-1-1 overall and Blair falls to 1-4-1. Burbank will return to action on Thursday, December 11th when they host Sacred Heart of Jesus at 3:45 p.m. and Blair will take on Westridge next Tuesday, December 16th at 3:15 p.m.
