Arcadia sweeps Burbank in the Friday Night Basketball Doubleheader

Lady Apaches defeat Lady Bulldogs 52-44 in girls contest & Arcadia routes Burbank 81-52 in boys contest

In the Pacific League opener for the Burbank Bulldogs basketball teams, both teams fell to the Arcadia Apaches. The basketball doubleheader on Friday night saw the Lady Bulldogs fall 52-44 to the Lady Apaches and before Arcadia routed Burbank 81-52 in the boys game to sweep the night. Madeline Tran led the Lady Apaches with 16 points in the win over the Lady Bulldogs and Matteo Ingersoll led the Arcadia boys team with 29 points in the win over the Bulldogs.

The girls began the night to start off the doubleheader. Arcadia began Pacific League play with a 59-29 win over Pasadena while Burbank went 2-1 in the first annual Burbank High School Girls Basketball Varsity Tournament showcase.

Ani Khachatryan began the night with back-to-back three-point shots to put the Lady Bulldogs up 6-0 over the Lady Apaches to start the opening quarter. Catelyn Chen got Arcadia on the board with a basket to make it a 6-2 game.

Manina Tuputupu scored an and-one basket on an assist by Annabelle Setaghian, but Tuputupu missed the opportunity to complete the three-point play, which resulted in Burbank being up 8-2. Hailey Lam cut the Lady Bulldog lead to four with a layup.Tuputupu and Khachatryan recorded back-to-back points to increase the Bulldog lead to nine. Misaki O’Donnell made one of two foul shots to trim the Lady Bulldogs lead to 13-5 at the end of one quarter.

Khachatryan began the second quarter with a three-point bank shot to increase the Lady Bulldog lead to 11. Hailey Lam made one of her two free throw attempts to make it a 16-6 game. The Lady Apaches came back to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to three with a clutch three point basket by Madeline Tran. The Lady Apaches closed the gap with the Lady Bulldogs in the second quarter and trailed 18-22 at the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Arcadia took advantage of Burbank’s early turnovers to start the second half, with Hailey Lam making a layup following a steal and then Madeline Tran made both of her foul shots to tie the game at 22. Tuputupu put the Lady Bulldogs back in front 24-22 by making both of her free throw attempts. Catelyn Chen and Tran recorded consecutive baskets to put Arcadia up 29-24.

Emma Wang and Misaki O’Donnell also contributed to the Lady Apaches scoring run with back-to-back makes to increase their lead to nine. Arcadia continued to have the advantage throughout the third quarter and led 42-32 heading into the final quarter of play. Tuputupu and Misaki O’Donnell traded points to start the fourth quarter.

Tran then recorded back-to-back points to get the lead up 15 for Arcadia. Setaghian cut the Arcadia lead to nine with a clutch three-point basket in hopes of sparking an epic comeback for the Lady Bulldogs, but Chen hit a three of her own to push the Arcadia lead back to 12. The Lady Apaches completed the eight-point win over Burbank. Ani Khachatryan led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points in the loss.

Burbank falls to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in Pacific League play with Arcadia improving to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League play. Burbank will take on Pasadena on Monday, December 15th at 5:15 p.m. at Pasadena High School in the battle of the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Apaches will host the Glendale Lady Nitros on Tuesday, December 16th at 5:15 p.m.

The boys’ contest between Arcadia and Burbank concluded the night in primetime. Not only was this the Pacific League opener for Burbank, this also was their season home opener. Arcadia came off a 58-53 win over Pasadena to kick off Pacific League play and Burbank started their season 3-1 at the San Gabriel Feast tournament two weeks ago. The Bulldogs placed third in the tournament with their 65-59 win over Pacifica Christian back on Saturday, November 29th.

Jon Ong and Nick Wallace Jr traded buckets to begin the first quarter. Jon Ong began the scoring for the Bulldogs with a layup and then Nick Wallace Jr nailed a three-point basket for the Apaches. Cris Ong put Burbank up in front 4-3 but Mateo Ingersoll tied the score at four by making one of his foul shots at the line. Both teams put on an entertaining first quarter with the Apaches leading by one heading into the second quarter.

Cris Ong got Burbank back in front by one with a layup to begin the second quarter before Ingersoll hit a three to put Arcadia back out in front 21-19. Anthony Jawiche responded with back-to-back threes to put Burbank up 25-21. Alec Mazakian cut the Bulldogs lead to one with a three of his own. The Apaches took control of the momentum to end the first half and entered halftime with a 35-30 lead over Burbank.

Following halftime, Giordan Lewis got the Bulldogs back within three with a two-point basket to start the third quarter. The Apaches then went on a 12-0 scoring run which gave them a clear edge over Burbank. Following Jon Ong’s two-point basket to end the Burbank scoring drought, Arcadia went on another scoring run – this time a 10-0 run. The Apaches led 57-34 heading into the final quarter of play.

Owen Edwards and Darieo Hannah Jr both helped the Apaches extend the lead up to 26 points to start the fourth quarter. The Apaches continued to put the game to bed throughout the final quarter to complete the 29-point victory over Burbank. Cris and Jon Ong combined for 27 points in the loss for the Bulldogs.

Burbank falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Pacific League play with Arcadia improving to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League. The Arcadia Apaches will host Rancho Mirage in the second half of their back-to-back Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Burbank will take on Pasadena in the battle of the Bulldogs showdown on Monday, December 14th at 6:45 p.m. at Pasadena High School.
