Derika Berenguer scores six goals in the win over the Bulldogs



The John Burroughs Bears secured a convincing 14-5 win over Pasadena in their Pacific League opening contest for girls’ water polo. Leading the charge with a six-goal performance was Derika Berenguer. Burroughs entered this one following a 2-2 record at the Los Altos Tournament with Pasadena suffering a 7-1 loss to Hoover in their Pacific League opener.



While it was a low scoring first quarter, Angelica Melchor and Derika Berengure both traded goals for their respective teams to open the scoring and they ended the first quarter being tied, 1-1. Bonnie Kretzman recorded two straight goals to start the second quarter to put the Bears up 3-1. Berenguer then increased the lead to three with a penalty shot goal. She added her second goal of the quarter to put the Bears up 5-1 heading into the halftime break.



Following intermission, Lauren Chapparo and Berengur recorded back-to-back goals to extend the Burroughs lead to 7-1. Angelica Melchor made it a 7-2 game with a goal but Bella Matossian and Kretzman recorded consecutive goals to give Burroughs a comfortable 9-2 lead. Berenguer then scored another goal in the third quarter to increase the lead to 10-2 heading into the final quarter of play.



Following a shot clock violation for Pasadena, Berenguer continued her offensive explosion by scoring her sixth goal of the contest. Tyler Timman also recorded a goal to make it a 12-2 game. Milana Thomas then scored three goals in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs. She was joined by Chapparo and Matossian, who added goals in the second half to help the Bears seal the nine goal win over the Pasadena Bulldogs.



Burroughs improves to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in Pacific League play with Pasadena dropping to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Thursday, December 18th as Pasadena will host Glendale with Burroughs hosting Arcadia. Both of those contests will take place at 3:45 p.m.
